Timescale is building the world’s next great database company on top of industry-standard PostgreSQL, and we need your help!  We are hiring an engineering manager to build and manage a team dedicated to reliability across our teams.

Timescale Cloud harnesses the power of TimescaleDB in a scalable cloud environment.  It allows for the writing of millions of records per second and boasts 10-100x faster queries than PostgreSQL, InfluxDB, and MongoDB.  It is used in critical business applications that require high availability.  Ensuring site reliability is key to keeping our customers delighted with our products.

If you love working collaboratively with product teams to help build infrastructure, tools, and processes, this might be the right job for you.  We are growing a global, fully distributed team that recruits, develops, and promotes people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and views. We believe when people are included and feel appreciated, it creates a culture where people can do meaningful and impactful work. This inspires fearless ideas, innovation, and amazing outcomes.

What you’ll do

As the Manager of Site Reliability, you will be responsible for the overall reliability of our hosted solutions.  You will work with product teams to find reliability practices that work with their development methodologies and tooling.  You will champion automation to ensure continuous improvement of reliability metrics.  Since we are building PromScale, our observability product on top of Timescale Cloud, you will also be dogfooding our own products and giving feedback to the observability teams.

At Timescale, we believe that the reliability of a product should ultimately be owned by the team that is building it.  We want SREs to be key members of each product team.  However, we see the benefits of having a guild of SREs across teams working together to ensure consistent tooling and processes across the engineering organization.  You will be in charge of this guild, including hiring new members and the strategies that it will employ.

At Timescale, we value diverse talent.  You will be the hiring manager for any roles open on your team.  You will work with a recruiter to build a pipeline of diverse, talented individuals who will help Timescale grow.  You will manage the hiring process for your roles, create the hiring and sourcing plan, build an interview panel, and ultimately make the final hiring decision.  Ideally, you will bring a strong network of potential candidates with you to Timescale.

Essential qualities in the successful candidate

You should be intimately familiar with everything it takes to develop, build, deploy and operate modern software.  You should have a significant track record of running highly available systems.  The people on your previous teams love working with you and will have no problem giving you positive feedback.  You have a strong track record of delivering high-quality software on a schedule.  You can manage people with empathy and respect and have tough conversations professionally.

Though coding experience is not required for this role (and we don’t expect engineering managers to write or review code), you should have a good idea of how software is architected and be able to communicate effectively with engineers and other technical staff about technical issues related to your team and the software they are building.  We value managers with a variety of backgrounds.  We are looking for managers who take care of the people on their teams and build processes and discipline to deliver excellent products for our customers.

Timescale has a fantastic culture built on solid values.   We have learner mindsets and think like owners. We’re kind to each other and support one another. We achieve together. We are colleagues here to do the best work of our lives.

Timescale is a fully remote company, and this is a remote job. We're hiring from anywhere that makes sense for managing teams across multiple time zones in western Europe and the eastern United States.

Benefits & Compensation

We offer globally competitive salaries.  Our benefits support our people and their families, and we strive to provide premium benefits such as flexible time off and the resources you need to support you in doing the best work of your career.
