Timescale is building the world’s next great database company on top of industry-standard PostgreSQL and we need your help!  We are hiring an engineering director to build and manage our teams that are developing Timescale Cloud, our cloud-native relational database platform for time-series.  

Timescale Cloud harnesses the power of TimescaleDB in a scalable cloud environment.  It allows for writing of millions of records per second and boasts 10-100x faster queries than PostgreSQL, InfluxDB and MongoDB.

What you’ll do

As the engineering director for the Cloud group, you will build and scale our teams to take Timescale Cloud to the next level.  You will work with our top-notch, global team of engineers to build scalable engineering practices across the group.  You will recruit and hire the best talent in the industry.  You will ensure that your staff have ample opportunities for career growth and that everyone feels included, appreciated and recognized for excellence.  You will work with the VP of Engineering and product leaders to ensure that we are working on the issues most important to our customers.  You’ll help build a strong culture of contribution back to open source projects.  

Engineering directors at Timescale are responsible for the operation of a group of teams.  The engineering manager on each team will report directly to the director.  The group may also include an architect and one or more staff engineers.  You will be directly responsible for their career growth and ensuring they are guiding their teams in ways that match company strategy and values.  You will work with your managers to improve team processes, always keeping our customers front and center in your thinking.  Though engineering directors don’t code, you will be expected to know what technical excellence looks like and to help mentor other members of your team toward technical goals.  

At Timescale, we value diverse talent.  You will be the hiring manager for any roles open on your team.  You will help your managers with their hiring needs, ensuring that candidates are treated professionally and respectfully.  You will work with a recruiter to build a pipeline of diverse, talented individuals who will help Timescale grow.  You will manage the hiring process for your roles, creating the hiring and sourcing plan, building an interview panel, and ultimately making the final decision on hiring.  Ideally, you will bring a strong network of potential candidates with you to Timescale.

Key qualities in the successful candidate

You should be intimately familiar with everything it takes to develop, build, deploy and operate modern software.  You should have a significant track record of successful product launches.  The people on your previous teams love working with you and will have no problem giving you positive feedback.  You have a strong track record of delivering high-quality software on a schedule.  You are able to manage people with empathy and respect and have tough conversations in a professional way.  

Though coding experience is not required for this role (and we don’t expect engineering directors to write or review code), you should have a good idea of how software is architected and be able to communicate effectively with engineers and other technical staff about technical issues related to your team and the software they are building.  We value directors with a variety of backgrounds.  We are looking for directors who take care of the people on their teams and work to build processes and discipline to deliver excellent products for our customers.

What Happens Next?  

We regularly review resumes and pick the most promising for a 30 minute initial conversation.  Upon a successful first call, you will speak with the hiring manager for 60 minutes to get a better understanding of your background and how you will apply it to Timescale.  If you and the hiring manager decide to continue the conversation, you will be scheduled with a panel of interviewers.  The final decision will be made by the hiring manager.
