Timescale is building the world’s next great database company on top of industry-standard PostgreSQL and we need your help!  We are hiring an engineering director to build and manage our teams that are developing our observability solution, Promscale.  

Promscale is a cloud-based, long-term store for Prometheus data, designed for analytics.   It is open source, horizontally scalable (petabyte-scale) and operationally mature.  It allows users to create observability solutions with the tools they already use: Grafana, SQL and PromLens.

What you’ll do

As an engineering manager at Timescale, you will have the opportunity to manage top-notch engineers creating the next generation time series database.  The Observability team is responsible for making it easy to ingest telemetry data from Prometheus and OpenTelemetry into Timescale as well as visualizing and acting on that data.  Promscale is designed to be a long-term store for Prometheus data.  It allows you to create dashboards, query your telemetry data and focus on the insights you need to see in your data.

Engineering managers at Timescale are responsible for the overall operation of the team.  You will be working directly with the engineers on your team to ensure they have the ability to grow in their career and feel fulfilled in their work.  You will also be working to define and iteratively improve team processes with high-quality, rapid iteration of product features in mind.  You will be working directly with the product manager to ensure roadmap items are properly defined, groomed, estimated and delivered.  You will work with engineering and product managers from other teams to ensure any dependencies are scheduled and met.  

At Timescale, we value diverse talent.  You will be the hiring manager for any roles open on your team.  You will work with a recruiter to build a pipeline of diverse, talented individuals who will help Timescale grow.  You will manage the hiring process for your roles, creating the hiring and sourcing plan, building an interview panel, and ultimately making the final decision on hiring.  Ideally, you will bring a strong network of potential candidates with you to Timescale. 

Key qualities in the successful candidate

You should be intimately familiar with everything it takes to develop, build, deploy and operate modern software.  You should have a significant track record of successful product launches.  The people on your previous teams love working with you and have no problem giving positive feedback.  You have a strong track record of delivering high-quality software on a schedule.  You are able to manage people with empathy and respect and have tough conversations in a professional way.  

Though coding experience is not required for this role (and we don’t expect engineering managers to write or review code), you should have a good idea of how software is architected and be able to communicate effectively with engineers and other technical staff about technical issues related to your team and the software they are building.  We value managers with a variety of backgrounds.  We are looking for managers who take care of the people on their team and work to build processes and discipline to deliver excellent products for our customers.

What Happens Next?  

We regularly review resumes and pick the most promising for a 30 minute initial conversation.  Upon a successful first call, you will speak with the hiring manager for 60 minutes to get a better understanding of your background and how you will apply it to Timescale.  If you and the hiring manager decide to continue the conversation, you will be scheduled with a panel of interviewers.  The final decision will be made by the hiring manager.
