The job:  

The Beauty Editor will conceive, write and develop content targeted for Black women in the beauty/hair sections of ESSENCE magazine and contribute regularly to ESSENCE.com’s beauty and hair channels. This is a key role for a team player interested in storytelling and journalism. Those who don’t possess a deep interest in the evolution of the written word across mobile, social and digital platforms need not apply.  


You will:

  • Conceive, write and edit beauty content for ESSENCE and ESSENCE.com
  • Collaborate across teams – editorial and beyond – to consistently create content that contributes to the larger mission of the company
  • Work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced, energetic environment
  • Work on special feature content as needed
  • Help the beauty and fashion department generate fresh ideas for features and department pages 
  • Cover beauty previews, events and product launches when your schedule permits
  • Top edit content from junior staffers, both online and in print, as needed
  • Use your own contacts to create and secure exclusive content

You are:

  • Proven: You have at least five years of experience writing clean, clicky copy for a beauty-focused publications and websites. You know what gets readers excited and create content guided by your deep interest in the psychology of what makes people share stories. You have a stable of beauty writers you can draw on as freelance contributors. You’ve worked in Drupal or a comparable CMS.
  • Self-Motivated:No hand-holding needed here. Your commitment to quality means your copy can sail through to "publish" without a second look.
  • Smart:Not just your IQ. You instinctively "get" what makes the magazine and website tick, and you are constantly thinking of ways to elevate content to drive traffic.
  • Organized: At a website and monthly magazine, things move quickly. You know how to prioritize so that nothing gets missed – especially not a deadline.
