Southern Living is seeking a Staff Writer to cover viral news. The ideal candidate should be able to create fast and engaging stories in all content areas. You will have at least two years of experience in a professional newsroom; a passion for covering entertainment and culture news; and a demonstrated ability to develop scoops of fact, analysis and ideas. This job requires the ability to spot stories in real time, and to cover them in a compelling and shareable way for Southern Living’s digital audience. The ideal candidate should be comfortable interviewing an actor or musician or small town mayor, covering a developing news story in real time and writing features for the audience of a lifestyle magazine. Must be interested and passionate about the South.
Have a finger on the pulse to fast publish trending pieces daily, with a focus on pop culture and viral news.
Use data and metrics to inform and improve performance of future stories.
Write and build 5 to 10 stories per day.
Do photo research and source from various outlets.
Be flexible and willing to cover different lifestyle topics.
Want to hit the road in a flash to cover a story.
Have an interest in writing longer-term stories that will appear in the print magazine.
Able and willing to work quickly under tight deadlines.
An excellent writer with great communication skills.
Digital-minded. You have a working knowledge of content-management systems.
Experienced at writing innovative, surprising service-driven stories
Team-oriented, responsive, and comfortable collaborating, but also able to work independently.
Have at least 2 years of experience at a digital news publisher or in a newsroom.
Passionate about Southern culture and growing the Southern Living brand.
