The job:

TIME for Kids is seeking a senior editor for its weekly current events magazine that is used in elementary and middle school classrooms. The senior editor will be involved in all aspects of creating content, from pitching, reporting, and writing stories to choosing photographs, working with designers, and editing other writers in a deadline-driven environment. He/she will also help manage timeforkids.com.


You will:

  • Conceptualize and help develop the story lineup for TFK.
  • Pitch, research, and write compelling news and feature stories.
  • Assign stories to staff writers.
  • Edit stories written by staff writers.
  • Adapt TIME stories so that the content is appropriate for younger readers.
  • Collaborate with editors to develop engaging content.
  • Manage TFK Kid Reporters by assigning, developing, and editing their stories.

 

You are:

  • Proven: You are a talented, detail-oriented writer/editor with a track record in publishing (7+ years). You have an undergraduate or graduate degree in journalism, communications, or education.
  • Resourceful: You are accustomed to working hard, pitching in to help others, taking a task from start to finish, and finding innovative solutions to problems. You are digital-savvy, organized, efficient, and deadline driven.

 

You have:

  • Seven plus years of experience writing and editing as a journalist. Writing and editing for students a plus.
  • A Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism, education, or a related field.
  • An awareness of education and the role of informational text in the classroom
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in journalism or education.
  • Experience using Adobe InCopy and InDesign, WordPress, and Excel or Google Sheets
