The Role

To oversee all real life features across four weekly titles, liaising with senior counterparts in the Real Life Hub to secure the best on-brand stories for the diverse audiences of Women’s Lifestyle brands.

To be responsible for the day-to-day running/supporting, of Woman’s Own under guidance from the Editor-in-Chief.


Key Responsibilities



  • Approve newspapers cuts and teasers daily – talk through ideas with Features Editor
  • Give direction for new features/ideas/campaigns
  • Approve real life content on flat plan grids for Woman/Woman’s Own/Woman’s Weekly and Now
  • Read and edit all copy from the Real Life Hub for Woman, Woman’s Own, Woman’s Weekly and Now. Send back and give guidance where copy not working
  • Liaise closely with Real Life Content Director to enable smooth running of the Features Hub
  • Help direct Art on layouts and adjust heads and sells where needed to fit layout and to go with pictures
  • Read and approve proofs at second review on InDesign – cutting copy where necessary and readjusting from subs cuts
  • Check with Features Editor all legals have been cleared and that necessary precautions taken where needed i.e. waiver for anonymity/children pixellated
  • Manage real life budgets so they are in line with the rest of the magazine(s)
  • Direct picture requirements in forward planning picture meetings
  • Check pictures on Elvis as they come in and liaise with picture desk where necessary
  • Work with The Foundry on advertorial campaigns and tie-ins with features in the brands
  • Liaise with advertising where possible to enable them to sell against possible content
  • Devise ideas/one shots/features campaigns to help promote the brand and provide extra revenue
  • Support Editor in Chief on all areas of the brands
  • Sign off POs from Real Life Hub
  • Complete Asset Audit on a weekly basis



  • Check run on Woman’s Own and that other layouts are true to brand – push back where possible
  • Keep an eye on competitor titles to keep abreast of their direction
  • Attend cover meetings – come up with the real life lines for Woman, Woman’s Own and Now (from issue 14) for the cover and possible celeb angles
  • Do a draft of Woman’s Own cover for Art Director to lay out. Work with Art Director to ensure pictures and lines work
  • Responsibility for Woman’s Own cover sign-off
  • Supply content for ‘Your Say’ page [or new format following redesign] sourcing ideas/letters and managing readers photographs
  • Manage responses to reader issues/complaints for Woman’s Own


Key requirements

  • Be strong under pressure and a confident decision maker
  • Be an active and constructive part of the Brand Team, working within the matrix management structure
  • Have significant length of service and practical experience regarding all aspects of real life content, including how to create real life features from news stories
  • Have sound knowledge of the editor’s code, the latest legal updates and IPSO
  • Be organised and able to maintain lists, future feature planning and flat plans
  • Be comfortable liaising with the Real Life Hub Director and senior writers with in the team to provide best practice and continuous feedback
  • Be comfortable with, and able to stick to, the tight deadlines involved in magazine production via hubbed editorial
