The Assistant Research Editor will work as a member of the combined copy and research team of Travel + Leisure (12x/year), Real Simple (12x/year), Departures (9x/year), and Centurion (2x/year), fact-checking short- and long-form print articles on a range of subjects.
Fact-check articles for accuracy using primary sources.
Assist the department head in managing assignments and workflow for a small team of freelancers.
Input changes from heavily marked paper proofs into InCopy.
Proven: You have least two years of experience at a consumer or trade publication and top-notch fact-checking skills. Should have a background in using primary sources rather than websites. Preference will be given to candidates who also have a professional background in copyediting, as the role will include pinch-hitting in that function.
A generalist: You’re a lifelong learner, with a broad range of knowledge in subjects ranging from travel, food, art, and history to fashion, health, and home décor. Proficiency in a foreign language is a plus.
Grace under fire: You’re known for your calm, direct approach to communication. You know how to be patient and persistent in pinning down sources. Able to problem-solve quickly to get work done under strict deadlines, as well as multitask and manage competing priorities, striking a balance between accuracy and 100% perfection.
