Summary of Role

Are you an experienced assigning editor who has built a high-performing freelance writing team? Do you enjoy coaching people and helping them do their best work? The senior assigning editor of freelance will grow, coach and edit our team of freelance writers at The Penny Hoarder. This content is essential to supplement the beat coverage of our in-house editorial team, as it brings in additional expertise, experience and ideas. This editor will plan and guide content to publication, ensuring standards and deadlines are met. In addition, this editor is an important part of our editorial staff that will help guide and execute our overall content strategy. This position is based in St. Petersburg, FL.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Finds and manages new talent, including accomplished writers and practicing industry experts with personal followings 
  • Cultivates and coaches new and existing freelance writers
  • Develops and maintains an editorial calendar, ensuring good promotion of the content
  • Assists with in-house team editing needs
  • Uses analytics to track content performance and make adjustments based on the data
  • Works closely with SEO, social and email colleagues to ensure good organic promotion
  • Maintains the freelance spending budget
  • Goes deep into developmental editing, asking challenging questions about content and structure, resulting in more complete, focused stories that paint a full picture
  • Thinks critically about story ideas and execution; offers ideas and suggests approaches for fresh, original angles not already covered by other outlets
  • Coaches writers toward fresh, less derivative content, including strategies for original reporting and identifying unique angles
  • Writes multiple clicky headlines of different types and styles
  • Proactively identifies and addresses the team’s needs, such as keeping copy flowing and removing obstacles
  • Balances working on quick-hit stories and more deliberately on more longer-term content
  • Helps lead the team to think critically about work and how to handle difficult content situations
  • Converts projects into specific tasks and schedules
  • Helps individual employees set goals that help the department and company move forward
  • Gets the best out of people through leadership skills, such as motivation, facilitation, coaching, leading by example and directing
  • Stays on top of industry trends and innovations, and integrates them into creative work
  • Understands best practices for platforms and coaches writers on them
  • Meets or exceeds individual and team goals for audience development and productivity
  • Consistently meets deadlines and takes ownership for their work
  • Consistently outperforms expectations on tasks; pushes entire team to perform at a higher level
  • Provides effective coaching, direction, feedback, delegation and motivation
  • Is sought out for their editing prowess; writers want to work with them to improve their stories
  • May also write posts

Technical Skills / Qualifications

  • At least five years of full-time professional editing experience in media
  • Experience managing freelance writers and building a freelance team
  • Experience in personal finance media is a plus
  • Working knowledge of Google Analytics and/or other analytics platforms
  • Working knowledge of SEO and social media
  • Working knowledge of AP style
