The Outline is looking for talented writers who are deeply curious about the world.
The ideal candidate should have lots of daily writing experience, a clear understanding of the 24/7 news cycle, and a ridiculous amount of excitement and energy. You love going after a story or sharing something with an audience. You won't be power-blogging a piece every half an hour, but you should be comfortable with juggling several things on a busy day. A comprehensive knowledge of the way news travels on the web and social networks both as a consumer and as a creator is a must.
A minimum of two years of experience writing full time for a national publication, working entirely or predominantly online, is ideal. You must be able to source and create multiple pieces a day (not simply text, but mixed-media digital work in a variety of lengths / styles), work in a fast-paced newsroom, and deliver clean, accurate copy. You should also be ready to work on video and audio stories both in light production and on-screen / on-mic. The ideal candidate is capable of writing / speaking intelligently with voice and personality without patronizing the reader. A sense of design, familiarity with photo editing tools, and knowledge of HTML and / or other languages is a huge plus. Essentially: be comfortable in a very modern environment.
We built a really cool system at The Outline for breaking down stories to their core elements. You should be able to not only see interesting angles into the news of the day, but find creative ways of expressing those angles.
We’re looking for people with a demonstrated interest in the following areas: politics, entertainment, technology, business, science, internet culture, music, or literature.
Do you have a high metabolism for news? A fascination with the way things work? A sense of humor and a critical eye? If you’ve got these qualities and you also happen to be a knockout writer, we’d like to meet you.
This is a full-time position in New York City.
