Our mission is to investigate and illuminate the societal effects of new technologies. With little accountability or oversight, technology is affecting who we vote for, how we raise our kids, who is able to get housing, jobs, healthcare and a comfortable life. We will investigate these impacts, with the goal of holding the powerful to account, raising the cost of bad behavior, and spurring reforms. We begin publishing later this year.
Along with deep-dive investigative projects, we also want to persistently monitor and uncover the ways that tech affects people. That’s why we’re building a quicker-turn team focused on producing well-reported, creatively told short- and medium-term enterprise stories, accountability stories, graphics and explainers.
This position will cover the effects of technology on work and the labor force. This beat explores how technology is affecting everything from the job search to the kinds of jobs that are available, to workplace and employer practices, including the rise of the gig and contract worker.

About the position
We are seeking an inventive, rigorous and collaborative Enterprise Reporter who can write twice-weekly articles breaking down the impact of technology on work and the workforce.
Our goal is to investigate and illuminate these issues, with a special emphasis on accountability, equality and justice.
Unlike most daily news jobs, this one does not involve chasing a grab bag of topics that comprise the news of the day nor does it involve matching every last story produced by other outlets. Rather, it is an enterprise position where reporters are responsible for generating their own stories and developing expertise on their particular beat.
Technology is shaping our world faster than most people can keep up. We aim to provide readers with the data, context, and history they need to unravel this emotional debate.
This position will report to the Senior Editor.
Together, the enterprise reporting team will be responsible for keeping the website fresh, relative and informative through a mix of daily explanatory and enterprise stories. Reporters will be responsible for generating and pitching story ideas, cultivating sources, reporting and writing articles twice a week.
We are looking for reporters who can take a rigorous, inventive and collaborative approach to twice weekly enterprise and explanatory stories.
We want to hire Reporters who:
- Have at least five years of experience writing news articles on deadline.
- Have shown a flair for enterprise and accountability stories.
- Are passionate about accuracy.
- Write clearly and can produce easy-to-understand explanatory articles.
- Are motivated by the issues of equality and justice.
- Are not scared of numbers.
- Work well with others.
- Are willing to evolve as our startup newsroom evolves.
Nice to Haves
- Familiarity with the technology industry is a plus.
- Coverage of the beat subject matter would also be helpful, but isn’t necessary
- Knows how to use Excel and/or SQL.
We pay people fair and reasonable salaries, in accordance with their skills, abilities, and experience. We also provide a generous benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, life, disability, parental leave, fertility support, pet insurance, and retirement plan contributions.
The salary for this position begins at $60,000, and will be established based on the successful candidate's experience, education and skills.
