The Daily Beast is well-known for its aggressive coverage of Washington. The Politics Editor is expected to help lead that coverage—conceiving, assigning, and editing news pieces, features, investigations, and analytical stories on all aspects of politics and policy. The Politics Editor will work closely with The Beast’s D.C. Bureau Chief and its team of reporters to bring home scoops about the outside agitators and the inside power players, the lawmakers and the agency leaders alike. In addition, the Editor must have demonstrated skills to write their own stories that weave interviews, anecdotes, and exclusive details into compelling narratives.
Responsibilities
Supervise The Beast’s staff reporters covering the White House, Congress, the national security agencies, K Street, and more.
Conceive and execute time-sensitive items as well as longer-form projects, all with an eye towards bringing home exclusive stories.
Mentor staff, helping to improve their stories and their skills.
Work closely with The Beast’s top editors in New York City and its teams around the world.
Adhere to the ethical code, policies and procedures of The Daily Beast.
Contribute ideas for graphics, data visualizations, and other means of enhancing audience engagement.
Qualifications
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple projects and deadlines, responding to breaking news as it occurs in a 24-hour cycle.
Willingness to collaborate with other reporters and editors.
Scoop-minded, with an eye towards breaking big, exclusive news.
A keen sense of The Daily Beast’s unvarnished approach to political coverage.
Dedication to helping reporters grow and improve their craft.
Proven strengths as a researcher, writer, reporter, and story-teller.
Advanced problem-solving skills.
Commitment and capacity to continue to develop sources.
Ability to take initiative, receive constructive feedback, and conceive and execute stories with impact.
A demonstrated understanding of pressing topics for diverse cultures, communities, and racial and ethnic identities.
At least eight years of reporting/editing or equivalent experience.
Based in Washington, D.C.
