Before applying, make sure you have and are able to:

  • At least 2 years experience in a school-based setting
  • Background in oral education/Listening & Spoken Language a plus
  • Full-Time Availability for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year to work on-site (in person), in a school located in Gulfport, Mississippi
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in sign language or interpreting functional areas in an educational setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) certification, through State Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) or National Registry Interpreter for the Deaf (RID).
  • Certified or credentialed by the National Association of the Deaf, the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, any other national certifying organization which is recognized by the state you are serving. Registered interpreters are required to adhere to professional standards and a Code of Ethics as established by the National Association of the Deaf and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
  • Ability to accurately interpret spoken language to sign language and interpret sign to spoken language for core subject classes, special area classes (i.e. physical education, art, music, etc.), meetings and various assignments as scheduled; follow and give oral and written directions; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population; maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language or other sign system used by students; Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct; technical signs or specialized vocabulary used in the courses assigned; deaf culture, local deaf community, and resources for the deaf; specialized equipment for the deaf and hard of hearing (such as TTY/VP).
  • Demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills; ability to work independently.
  • Maintains awareness of best practices, emerging trends and new legislation relating to Sign Language/Interpreting functional area.
  • Accuracy: Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
  • Fluency: Native level proficiency in a minimum of two languages
  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively and clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Computer Skills: Proficient ability to use the computer for Google Drive, Zoom, and Mira (TeleTeachers Platform)
  • Confidentiality: Maintain student, team member, and employer confidentiality.  Comply with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Customer service-oriented: Friendly, cheerful, and helpful to students, families, staff members, and providers
  • Flexibility: Ability to adapt easily to changing conditions and work responsibilities
  • Positivity: Display a positive attitude and is a positive agent for change
  • Leadership Skills: Ability to influence others to perform their jobs effectively
