WLTX-TV, the CBS affiliate located in Columbia, S.C., is looking to hire a full-time Weekend Sports Anchor/MSJ! The ideal candidate for this position is an enterprising sports journalist that knows how to tell a great story. The role will include reporting, anchoring on weekends, and fill-in sports anchor work during the week.
The successful candidate is someone who understands storytelling is about emotion, great camera work, and thoughtful writing. We're also looking for someone who understands that anchoring isn't just about reading scripts. The ideal candidate will connect with the community on all platforms. Some travel is involved, especially when local teams are playing at a championship or on a national level.
You will be expected to take ownership of your stories, coordinate the stories with newsroom managers, set up stories in advance, and consistently manage a calendar of stories for shows. The sports MSJ position is one that requires the person in it to be a team player. That means when Breaking News or other big news stories are on the forefront, this position could be asked to shoot video and/or a live shot for news.
Responsibilities:
- Ability to identify and develop enterprise stories that connect with the viewer
- Assist with producing, anchoring and reporting for high school sports coverage every Friday during high school football season
- Establish relationships with players and coaches for all sports at various levels (little league, high school, college, minor league, etc.)
- Write, shoot, and edit for TV, web, social media and streaming platforms
- Develop original local sports content and develop relationships in the sport community
- Demonstrate an ability to make content stand out from the norm
- Be creative
- Write and present in an exciting, conversational way
- Meet daily deadlines, and maintain a steadfast commitment to journalistic integrity
Requirements:
- BA/BS in journalism, communications, or related field or equivalent years of experience
- Minimum of one year experience working in journalism, communications preferred
- Experience in photojournalism, editing and content management systems
- Knowledge of professional journalistic standards as related to on-air, digital and social presentation
- Ability to generate creative, engaging, content-driven live shots, with strong on-air presence and delivery skills
- Strong social media skills
- Knowledge of ENPS (scripting) and Edius (editing) preferred
- Organizational skills and the ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines
