TEGNA Inc. is seeking a Senior Manager, Payroll to manage our payroll department. This position is part of the TEGNA corporate team with company-wide responsibility but will be physically located at our NBC Affiliate in Indianapolis, WTHR (Hybrid onsite/remote schedule). Our ideal candidate will have experience with UKG, although candidates with similar payroll system experience will be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of payroll professionals handling the bi-weekly disbursement of multi-state payroll, including garnishments, benefits and taxes to 6,000+ U.S. based employees.
  • Stay up to date on regulations affecting payroll, payroll tax, withholding orders and garnishments to ensure compliance and best practices.
  • Manage and review pay-cycle audits to ensure payroll accuracy.
  • Analyze and evaluate complex technical payroll procedures, controls and information and documentation systems. Recommend and implement changes leading to best-practice operations.
  • Ensure all payroll processes are documented and up-to-date with any enhancements and improvements.
  • Set up new earnings & deduction codes in the payroll system.
  • Manage SOX compliance documentation and testing for payroll.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits of payroll.
  • Manage regular preparation of relevant management reports, including weekly, monthly, quarterly and year-end reports (gross payroll, hours worked, vacation accrual, tax deductions, benefit deductions, etc.)
  • Develop, compile and publish meaningful and informative payroll metrics.
  • Manage the year-end process to ensure timely issuance of accurate Form W-2s and to ensure setup of accurate payroll and benefit deductions the first pay period of the next year.
  • Manage the relationship with a 3rd party vendors to set up and process garnishments and other withholding orders and for tax reporting and payroll/tax funding.
  • Establish and maintain positive professional relationships with HR and IT teams that partner with payroll.
  • Manage the calculation and accuracy of retro-pay adjustments. Generate off cycle and manual checks as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting or related field required; equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted
  • CPP certification and APA membership preferred
  • 5-7 years of experience managing a multi-state payroll department, including management of staff
  • Extensive knowledge of processing payroll in a sophisticated ERP system; ideal candidate will have experience processing payroll and timekeeping with UKG Pro and Workforce Management
  • Understanding of payroll data and how it is recorded in and impacts the general ledger
  • Proficiency with MS Office (especially Excel)
  • Working experience with payroll taxes at the federal, state and local levels
  • Experience in union and non-union environments preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equity award taxation and reporting (i.e. Stock Options, Restricted Stock Units, Performance Shares)
  • Proven attention to detail, good organizational and prioritizing skills and ability to multi-task and work in a rapidly expanding and changing environment
  • Ability to manage, motivate and lead staff to excellent performance
  • Good decision-making, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to be self-motivated and proactive
  • Collaborative approach and experience working well with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written); strong interpersonal skills
