WXIA-TV (11Alive), the TEGNA-owned NBC affiliate in Atlanta, is recruiting an innovative, passionate News Director with experience leading newsroom operational teams and growing talent.

The news director at 11Alive will work closely with other newsroom senior managers, including the director of content, managing editor, and digital director, to make sure our day-to-day news coverage delivers stories that are timely and highly relevant to the Atlanta audience. You will oversee our teams of photographer/editors, assignment desk and general assignment reporters to ensure that we excel and support the strategic vision for station growth. The ideal candidate has excellent news judgment and strong management skills to own the big story each day.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategically lead, inspire and guide daily editorial decision-making.
  • Oversee local news gathering and broadcast news content. 
  • Work closely with the news team to produce high-quality, relevant, local content told with context and information the viewer can use.
  • 11Alive is one content team. Prioritize collaboration between television and digital content teams, along with marketing, to deliver breaking news, weather, and sports coverage for all platforms. 
  • Foster, encourage and reward out-of-the-box thinking that leads to differentiation and success. 
  • Supervise photographer/editors and reporters, in partnership with managing editor and assignment manager
  • Establish newsroom drone program, in partnership with chief photographer.
  • Use research and analytics to determine content. 
  • Skillfully use social media and digital tools to research, discover and distribute content. 
  • Lead a culture that prioritizes establishing trust in the community that leads to exclusive tips.  
  • Inspire and coach superior, unique and engaging storytelling. 
  • Interact daily with all news managers in a mutual effort to achieve station goals and extend our brand. 
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, to drive and fulfill the mission while abiding by the values of this organization.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
  • At least 12 years of news content experience and a minimum of five years managing other journalists. 
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment for audience growth, along with staff and product development skills.  
  • Top notch communication and people skills are an absolute must. A sense of humor will come in handy.
  • Solid journalistic judgment and a news philosophy that emphasizes accurate, fair, and unique local content, along with community engagement.  
  • Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism. 
  • Skills in producing engaging, content-driven newscasts and digital content. 
  • Organizational skills and the ability to work under time pressure deadlines. 
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events.  
  • Hands-on experience supervising desk, or as news operations manager or chief photographer will make your application stand out.
  • Familiarity with Atlanta or a reason to relocate here, a plus.
