KPNX, the TEGNA-owned NBC affiliate in Phoenix, AZ is looking for an Executive Producer to lead our producers in elevating 12News content. This person must be a creative, motivational, and experienced newsroom leader who can successfully identify great, impactful content, and live up to the 12News brand - “Dedicated to Journalism. Dedicated to You” - on broadcast, digital, and social platforms.

The ideal candidate should love teaching and giving regular feedback, as we work to provide the very best news coverage possible across all platforms. This role will also be responsible for leading daily editorial conversations and making sure our content reflects the communities we represent. This person should also be a leader in the control room and jump in when there is breaking news. They need to be able to produce and booth a newscast, as needed. This critical team member will assist in other newsroom duties, such as coordinating with the assignment desk, digital team and fellow newsroom leaders and planning long term projects and coverage.

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the daily performance and editorial process of 12News producers
  • Oversee multiple newscasts to ensure they meet our strategic goals to fit our brand
  • Continually coach newscast producers to create unique shows with strong showcasing
  • Review and approve scripts and rundowns to ensure accuracy and quality
  • Use research and audience feedback to improve 12News
  • Lead breaking news coverage
  • Lead teams in the creation of unique, shareable content
  • Inspire enterprise stories and coordinate special coverage with news leadership team
  • Identify daily opportunities to have our news get noticed and reach new audiences
  • Recruit and coach new producers
  • Skillfully use social media and digital tools to research, discover, and distribute content
  • Work with the digital desk to identify and assign content appropriately for each platform
  • Work collaboratively with other managers and perform tasks as required

Requirements: 

  • Applicants must have major breaking news experience, strong editorial judgment, newscast producing expertise and fully understand the needs of our audience across all platforms
  • Strong understanding of the tenets of professional journalism
  • Experience successfully leading teams through content transformation
  • The ideal candidate should be adept at creating an audience-focused content calendar that aligns with research and the needs of our audience
  • Strong organizational, motivational and communication skills
  • 3+ years leadership experience preferred as a senior producer, EP or newsroom manager
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications preferred
  • Travel: Rarely: less than 10%
