The Director of Engineering will have four main responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and enterprise architecture of the company's internal and consumer facing applications
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Drive strategy and manage resources (both internal and 3rd party) to ensure best-in-class solutions that are of high quality, cost effective (on budget), sustainable and market leading
  • Work closely with Product teams and the business to effectively translate business strategy and objectives into technological capability, while developing the appropriate architecture road map to ensure technological compatibility and compliance with all IT systems

 
Additional responsibilities include:

People Leadership

  • Provide strategic direction and day-to-day leadership to a team of highly technical employees
  • Develop and maintain an organization of high performing people through effective hiring, coaching and rigorous performance/talent management processes
  • Influence and implement a resource strategy (internal vs. external) based on business need, scope of work, cost, and skill requirements
  • Foster a collaborative, success-oriented team environment where resources are empowered and accountable

Application Development

  • Define, implement, staff, direct and control all aspects of the SDLC in an Agile development environment so as to ensure quality product delivery that meets business requirements and expectations - on time and within budget
  • Collaborate with the business and product teams to understand business strategy and needs, customer needs and market trends
  • Deliver operational excellence through development, formal release schedules and release management processes, service level agreements (SLAs), problem resolution through system monitoring, and change management
  • Lead and inspire the software engineering team to focus on developing new software products, delivering website and mobile applications capabilities, and back-office or internal projects
  • Drive software architecture decisions across mobile, web, and third party vendor systems
  • Manage and ensure our technology platforms are consistent with industry and data compliance standards
  • Assess and communicate risks based on complexity, resource and timeline constraints
  • Drive velocity to speed time to market for our new features and products
  • Identify “proof of concepts” for emerging technologies solutions that specifically focus on improving business KPI’s
  • Participate in selection of preferred technologies and standards.
  • Represent software engineering in cross-functional projects
  • Drive an improvement in velocity to speed time to market for our new products

Enterprise Architecture

  • Define, build, and lead the IT enterprise architecture framework on a consistent and continuous basis
  • Understand enterprise level strategy and help formulate EA Strategy to ensure alignment of IT resources to support business strategy
  • Act as the subject-matter-expert in the Enterprise Architecture capabilities, processes, tools, and best practices
  • Develop and maintain architecture roadmaps and evolution plans
  • Create and maintain multi-level business capability maps, linking IT systems and services to the functions and processes they support
  • Provide architecture consultation on complex projects and be considered a top level contributor/specialist
  • Participate in selection of preferred technologies and standards

Desired Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field; or equivalent work experience
  • 10+ years of relevant experience showing progress from a developer to technical leader
  • 7+ years of experience leading application development teams
  • 3+ years experience as a senior engineer or architect
  • Experience managing engineering teams of at least 15 engineers
  • Experience architecting and building scalable applications.
  • Strong architecture experience with designing distributed systems (SOA patterns and REST)
  • Strong architecture experience with designing microservices style APIs and architecture
  • Project management expertise
  • Experience with Rails, React Native, iOS, Android or related technologies in addition to cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, etc)
  • Leading software architecture decisions - across web, mobile, and third party vendor systems
  • Experience collaborating with nearshore technology teams as plus
  • Experience with back office systems such as Pegasystems, Salesforce etc (CRM)
  • Expert in agile methodologies
