Sunset, the West’s most iconic lifestyle media brand, is looking for new team members to expand its storytelling across digital, video, and social to reach new audiences with its signature premium content that celebrates the Best of the West.  In addition to publishing our bimonthly print magazine, Sunset has millions of digital readers across our website, newsletters, and social media channels. We are passionate about showcasing the West’s best chefs, designers, artisans, makers, personalities, homes, gardens, natural wonders, and travel destinations.

Home and design have been at the core of Sunset since its launch more than 120 years ago. Now we’re looking for an editor to expand our coverage of the Western home in new directions, on all platforms. The ideal candidate will be a design aficionado, with interests and connections ranging from marquee names to emerging designers and architects to obscure historical influences. Yes you know what’s “now” but you also know what’s next, and you help our readers access the best in home design, architecture, decor and interior design, furnishings, tabletop, appliances, and more. We aspire to cover everything from design trends to materials and suppliers to the changing marketplace for home products, all with an end goal of helping readers improve their lives with every pixel and every page. 

Our bimonthly magazine will, of course, be a major focus, but we’re looking for an entrepreneurial editor who not only understands the importance of digital and video but can also aggressively grow our voice and audience on new platforms but also actively seeks out new partnerships, endeavors, and business opportunities for the brand. We want someone who loves “the lifestyle of the West” so much they’re constantly demonstrating it out loud, to friends, co-workers, and the public at large.


  • Oversee, write, edit, and produce home-design coverage in every issue of Sunset
  • Work closely with our senior home and design writer on a robust print and digital feature slate
  • Write and produce multiple stories a week for, from quick turnaround stories to features
  • Represent Sunset in digital video programming and television
  • Develop new video franchises, from snackable social content to home tour videos
  • Oversee prototyping of content concepts in social, digital, and video
  • Write and produce multiple stories a week for
  • Aggressively grow our voice and audience in the digital space
  • Oversee the Sunset Idea house and other brand tent poles
  • Forge relationships with design industry professionals and organizations
  • Run high-level conversations with real-estate agencies and architects to develop first-look content opportunities
  • Launch and run Home and Design awards program
  • Work with social media editor to develop our home and design influencer program
  • Oversee content funnel for platform-specific initiatives on Instagram, Pinterest, and beyond
  • Oversee home-design merchandise and affiliate-commerce efforts
  • Develop editorial calendar, establish tentpoles, and help with events and outreach
  • Oversee and write home-design newsletters, including developing new concepts
  • Assist with curation of the Sunset subscription box
  • Partner with ad and marketing stakeholders for concepts, prototypes, and specific ideation 


  • A firm grasp of the Sunset brand and aesthetic 
  • 5 to 7 years experience writing, editing, and producing home-design stories for print and/or digital, ideally with on-camera experience
  • Broad network of industry connections, including publicists, designers, decorators, and architects
  • A journalist’s rigorous approach to storytelling combined with an entrepreneur’s curiosity and tenacity 
  • An ability to hit the ground running and get things done
