Position Overview:

Summit Public Schools is seeking a Program Specialist who will play a critical role in empowering special education teachers and site administrators to ensure all students receive a free, appropriate and high quality public education in the least restrictive environment. This position provides regional expertise, coaching, and modeling to develop highly effective classroom teachers; confident and compliant case-managers; and powerful influences in the lives of some of Summit Public School’s most at-risk students. Summary of Responsibilities:

The Special Education Program Specialist primary responsibilities include:

  • Observe, consult with, and assist Education Specialists in planning, organizing and instructing students as well as developing IEPs
  • Assist site level administrators in supporting, training, and coaching special education teachers
  • Serve as a knowledgeable professional in the Individual Education Program (IEP) planning process.
  • Act as LEA representative in IEP meetings
  • Act as induction coach or Support Provider (for Interns)
  • Provide IEP case-management (ensure implementation of IEP, monitors progress on goals, designs IEP and facilitate meeting) for students in special education at each site (cap at 5 students per site)
  • Provide direct service to individuals with exceptional needs on the bases of consultancy and intervention
  • Coordinate and develop plans for incoming students including Transition IEPs, students in private schools placements and transfer students who require interim IEPs.
  • Plan program, coordinates curricular resources, and evaluates effectiveness of programs for individuals with exceptional needs
  • Collaborate with Director of Special Education to develop and coordinate the delivery, and effectiveness of relevant professional development activities for specific special education staff
  • Develop, implement, and revise behavior programs for identified students in accordance with best practice methodologies and procedures; provides ongoing monitoring of behavior programs, including individuals and group instruction
  • Develop data collection systems, monitor data collection and provide programmatic recommendations based upon results
  • Oversee referral for special education including responding to parent requests in accordance with legal requirements
  • Advise and consult with site level administration in determining appropriate offers of FAPE and 504 plans
  • Develop and/or coordinate effective inclusive practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment

  • This position requires possession of, or eligibility for one of the following: Education Specialist credential in Special Education, Speech and Language, or Pupil Personnel Services credential in School Psychology, Counseling or Social Work
  • At least five years of teaching experience is recommended for individual applying for this position
  • Experience creating Individual Education Programs (“IEP”) along with the ability to evaluate an IEP for legal compliance is necessary
  • This position requires travel to multiple school sites per week, and, at times per day.
  • Applicants must meet health clearance, and pass the reference, background/criminal checks, per education code.
