Director of Human Resources

The Director of Human Resources is passionate about Summit’s greatest asset - our people - and plays a critical role in developing and retaining a diverse, world-class faculty.

From onboarding new hires and serving as a culture guide to coaching and supporting leaders on values based feedback and performance conversations, they embody our vision and mission and enable great faculty to grow and stay with us longer.

They lead the team responsible for the planning and execution of our human resources services and systems, which work to meet the needs of our 500 employees.

The ideal candidate is a relationship builder, loves to solve problems, relishes in the challenges of finding ways to work smarter, and has superb project management skills. They are not afraid of difficult conversations or Excel spreadsheets.

As a team lead in our home office, they will work closely with senior leadership and collaboratively with Summit’s Talent team to create an exceptional faculty experience. They will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and manage a Human Resources Manager.

What You’ll Do:

Human Resources Leadership and Capacity Building

  • Lead and oversee all functions of Human Resources including the offer and enrollment process, teacher credentialing, benefits, employee safety and compliance, and employee engagement
  • Engage school leaders, teachers and other faculty throughout the organization to provide exceptional human resource tools, systems and processes
  • Provide outstanding executive administration and support to school leaders, and other senior leaders, including high quality coaching on management
  • Manage Human Resources team; this includes creating a strategic plan, annual goals and progress monitoring systems

Employee Engagement

  • Manage and support onboarding for all new hires
  • Partner with school leaders and team leads to address and resolve employee issues
  • Support faculty with accomodations
  • Manage exit interviews and offboarding practices; synthesize data and use themes to propose and implement changes in systems to address opportunities surfaced

Benefits and Policies Management

  • Manage open enrollment processes, communication, and training as well as relationship with third-party HR system vendors
  • Manage leave of absences and time off policies
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data to identify gaps in our existing human resources policies and practices, and partner with senior leaders to develop and implement new policies and structures to address gaps
  • Advise and stay up to date on employment policy changes to ensure organizational practices are up-to-date and in compliance

Risk Management

  • Lead a culture of excellence in managing workplace safety and staff compliance at all levels of the organization
  • Conduct audits and processing of benefits, pay scales and other related HR systems

This position is based in the Bay Area, requires occasional travel throughout the Bay Area and Washington State, and may require occasional travel to other regions.

What You Need:

Key Qualities and Skills   

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Master’s Degree in a field connected to Human Resources preferred
  • 5+ years prior experience in human resources and employee administration work preferred
  • Experience leading a team, including managing one or more direct reports preferred
  • Previous work with entrepreneurial or educational organizations preferred
  • SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP or PHR/SPHR certification preferred
  • Alternative Certificate/Diploma in Human Resources Management will be considered
