Head of Growth

Substack is looking for an inaugural Head of Growth to own the strategy and execution of the work to connect more writers and readers to the value of Substack. You will partner closely with our CEO and Head of Product in order to build and lead the overall growth strategy. This position will ideally be located in the San Francisco Bay Area.

 

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Data team to ensure we understand our growth model: where growth is coming from, what’s going well, what isn’t -- and ensure this story is well understood across the company
  • Identify the biggest opportunities for product-led growth and prioritize accordingly
  • Lead a cross functional product team (PM, engineering, design, data) to run experiments and ship products that drive growth
  • Identify opportunities for growth marketing at every stage of the funnel (acquisition, activation, retention) and work with marketing team to execute on campaigns 
  • Act as the overall steward of Substack’s experimentation process and culture: helping develop our experiment and measurement frameworks and helping teams across the company test & learn effectively
  • Work closely with our executive leadership team to ensure that our growth strategy is a key component of the overall company strategy at all times

Requirements

  • 10+ years experience in the growth function at a comparable company, including leadership roles
  • Ability to roll up your sleeves and be scrappy – you will start with very limited resources and really be responsible for building things up from scratch
  • Growth frameworks (like cohort analysis and growth accounting) should be second nature
  • Strong analytical skills, competence in SQL, and experience with tools (like Amplitude and Periscope) for analysis
  • Strong communication skills, to effectively influence teams and strategy
  • Ability to collaborate well with cross-functional partners across the company
  • An owner’s mindset - you don’t shy away from the hard stuff
