As a Senior Product Designer, you’ll learn and understand the needs of our users, envision how users should experience our products, and then bring that vision to life in a way that feels inspired and thoughtful.  The Senior Product Designer owns the end-to-end design process and leads the user experience strategy for their defined product area. With deep expertise in User-Centered Design (UCD), you will be a critical partner to cross-functional peers in navigating ambiguity, complexity, and constraints throughout the product development lifecycle while actively helping to refine our design practice at Submittable.

We’re developing world-class software and products that become mission-critical applications; we need designers who can bring their passion for creating elevated experiences, driving innovation, and leading with a customer-centric lens while executing with high judgment, ownership, and strategic, big-picture thinking. 

This role is part of our Product organization and reports to the Vice President of Product, following a hybrid office model. 

What You’ll Do: leverage research and data to derive strategic insights, identify opportunities to optimize user experiences, increase user engagement, and inspire our target audiences to choose Submittable as their solution by -

  • Leading and executing the design process to create best-in-class user experiences with cross-functional peers
  • Expertly selecting user-centered design methods to drive initiatives forward, knowing which methods are most appropriate and effective in different scenarios
  • Conducting various research activities (i.e., user interviews, customer surveys, usability tests) to identify product opportunities, aid feature prioritization, and validate the effectiveness of design concepts
  • Creating artifacts such as user flows, storyboards, and high-fidelity prototypes that promote a thorough understanding of the solution and the ‘why?’ behind it
  • Collaborating closely with engineering to understand technical limitations and engineering level of effort for various solutions
  • Working within time constraints, generally estimating and timeboxing for milestones with a focus on rapid iteration
  • Facilitating workshops or design sprints to address complex opportunities that require divergent thinking
  • Advocating for and designing inclusive, accessible experiences for all users
  • Influencing high-level strategic decisions and product roadmap with both the Product and Executive teams
  • Assisting the development of design standards and contributing components, patterns, and documentation to Submittable’s emerging design system
  • Giving and receiving design critiques to encourage high-quality work and continuously improve Submittable’s design practice
  • Taking an active role in Submittable’s innovation journey by partnering cross-functionally to help build a scalable, robust, and streamlined design system that is easily maintained and updated

How You’ll Know You’re Crushing It:

  • You’re a domain expert: using your UX subject matter expertise, customer and industry research, and innate curiosity, you can drive the adoption of design systems, mechanisms, best practices, processes, and tools.
  • Leadership Skills: you see yourself as a strong UX leader who can guide a cross-functional team to translate business requirements and user stories into exceptional user experiences.

What You Need to be Successful:

  • A Bachelor’s or higher degree in UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field; advanced certifications in UX Strategy or Digital Experience a plus
  • 7+ years of design experience 
  • You know your way around Figma!
  • Knowledge of UX process and UX best practices - frameworks, interaction models, prototypes, research
  • Strategic Digital Leadership: ability and desire to contribute to executing visionary UX strategies, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and customer needs
  • Strong expertise across business strategy, product thinking, interaction, visual design, and customer empathy
  • Experience acquiring user data (e.g., conducting usability studies, performing user research) and creating personas and journey maps
  • Experience using systems-level design thinking to identify opportunities, ideate, and implement components that support business needs, enhance user experience, and drive design solutions that scale
  • Demonstrable examples of successfully driving new interaction approaches 
  • Openness and willingness to accept and provide constructive design feedback
  • Confidence defining, developing, and socializing a clear vision for design innovation and big thinking while not sacrificing speed of delivery
  • Demonstrated skills at thinking across end-to-end user journeys and designing for multiple personas and varying user needs
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present intricate strategies, research insights, and UX design rationale to executive stakeholders 
  • Strong communicator, collaborator, and advocator - ability to confidently use data and customer insights to present and defend design solutions with all stakeholders
  • Ability to work at varying altitudes, from detailed design specs to strategic visualizations supporting long-term design goals
  • Experience developing and implementing processes and identifying improvement opportunities that drive quality and efficiency

Salary Details: The annual salary range for this position is $127,000-$171,000. Actual compensation is based on the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience. 

Position Location: This role will be in Bellevue, WA, or, Missoula, MT, following a hybrid work model. Employees are expected to be willing to work from one of our office locations twice a week or as needed by your team.
