“VR” is an industry buzzword right now. And the majority of the tech that has been created to date has been focused on the development of hardware and content for spaces such as gaming and entertainment…. ignoring the range of possibilities available in retail.

This is the opportunity to get in early with a stealth company currently being incubated in Venice, CA by Walmart's tech incubator, Store No 8.  Spatialand was acquired by Store N° 8, Walmart’s incubation arm for developing capabilities that will transform the future of commerce, in February 2018. At Store N° 8, the Spatialand team will develop and explore the future of VR through the lens of amazing retail and shopping experiences.

What you’ll oversee (and often do):

  • Creation and execution of the overarching strategy for the company’s technical architecture and systems
  • Coach and mentor employees at all levels to foster a culture of success on teams including Software Engineering, 3D Asset Development, QA, DevOps, Data Engineering, and Systems Administration
  • Collaboration of the development team with the internal creative and BD teams, external clients, and managed contract vendors
  • Act as company's internal and external spokesperson in all technology-related matters
  • Buildout and launch VR experiences and products with a hardware-agnostic strategy that includes the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Gear VR, and others
  • Manage and develop top-tier talent, including recruitment, engagement, and well-being


  • 10+ years in a Technical leadership role
  • Superb communication and relationship skills, including the ability to work with and present to C-level executives and board members
  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams of developers, both full-time and contract, both in-person and remote
  • Experience developing, debugging, and shipping software products on large code bases that support multiple platforms
  • Diligence, curiosity, and a results-oriented nature. You’re not afraid to speak up and push back when you disagree, because you know that open and frank debate produces the best results. You’re also thick skinned and able to take constructive criticism and feedback
  • Experience and solid understanding of modern, cloud-centric architectures, infrastructure design, DevOps principles, and administering software delivery tools
  • Familiarity with cloud provider services such as Azure or GCP with working knowledge of compute, storage, networking, and database components
  • Experience with database ETL and database query optimization, NoSQL and SQL datasets
  • Linux and/or Windows administration experience
  • Advanced experience with scripting languages (python, bash, perl, powershell, etc), infrastructure automation and tools such as Puppet, Salt, Ansible
  • Working knowledge deploying systems utilizing big data frameworks and tools such as Hadoop, Kafka, Mesos, Spark, Storm, Elasticsearch, and Cassandra
  • Technical knowledge of security best practices across a variety of cloud and on-premise use cases and architectures
  • Strong knowledge of IP networking including DNS, load-balancing, and firewalls.
  • Demonstrated experience with the Software Development Lifecycle, especially Agile programming methodologies
  • Understanding of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA and REST)
  • Deep technical experience within a VR/AR/XR company and experience working directly on development teams using:
    • C-family programming languages (C# and C++)
    • Real-time rendering engines (Unity)
    • Version control and repository management software (Perforce, Git)
    • 3D asset creation for real-time engines (Maya, Zbrush, Substance Painter)
    • Realtime networked features (i.e., synchronous multiplayer games)
  • Proven track record of significantly increasing efficiency and delivering positive results across large platforms & functional areas using innovative technology solutions
  • Success in an entrepreneurial environment, ideally within a high growth technology company
  • Ability to envision a future where today’s limitations of VR don’t exist, and to plan for a future where distribution and scale are no longer limitations
  • Experience and passion for rapid prototyping and development in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience hiring and managing external agencies
  • Some experience in 3D math, linear algebra, physics, optics, computer vision, robotics, sensor fusion, or machine learning a plus
