3D Modeler/Technical Artist, Spatialand

“VR” is an industry buzzword right now. And the majority of the technology that has been created in this space has been focused on the development of hardware and content for spaces such as gaming and entertainment, ignoring the range of possibilities available in retail. At our core, we are merchandisers and storytellers which drives us to believe that virtual reality has the potential to reinvent the consumer experience—with an experience we call contextual commerce.

We are looking for an experienced software/gaming or VR multimedia 3D Modeler with a skill set that includes some Unity expertise.  You will be part of an amazing team helping to shape the future of immersive experiences, global eCommerce and interactive media.

This is the opportunity to get in from the first day at a stealth company currently being incubated in Los Angeles by Walmart’s tech incubator, Store No 8.  Spatialand was acquired by Store N° 8, Walmart’s incubation arm for developing capabilities that will transform the future of commerce. At Store N° 8, the Spatialand team will develop and explore new products and uses of VR through immersive retail environments that can be incorporated by all facets of Walmart, online and offline. Our new venture is currently operating in stealth mode as we work out of our beautiful Venice, CA office.

Responsibilities

  • Model hard surface environments, props, products, assets, foliage and other items as needed for immersive VR experiences
  • Set up 3d assets and optimize lighting in Unity
  • Optimize 3D assets in Unity to meet the high-performance requirements of VR applications
  • Create clean object topology, UV’s and textures
  • Work with source files and scans from a variety of sources
  • Work closely with developers and creative team to determine new techniques for 3D production pipeline
  • Collaborate with a multi-faceted team of developers and designers to ensure the product vision is conveyed in an impactful and expressive manner
  • Work with cross functional team to continually improve 3d pipeline and process for bringing 3d objects in to VR
  • Keep up to date with the technological advancements in 3d scans and modeling tools

Qualifications

  • 3+ years modeling and texturing 3D assets optimized for game engines
  • Ability to create hard surface and/or organic models with a high level of realism
  • Experience with high and low poly models
  • Must have excellent level of proficiency with Autodesk Maya
  • Proficient knowledge of Allegorithmic Substance Painter
  • Ability to create believable textures and lighting effects with optimal use of real-time shaders
  • High level of proficiency with Unity, specifically lighting scenes and optimizing shaders
