SUMMARY:
In this position, you will be an essential part of the Manufacturing Engineering team collaborating with design engineers, bike developers, test labs engineers, quality engineers, and suppliers. You will be the resident expert in alloy material failure mode analysis of tested or returned products to identify root cause and corrective actions. You will work with partners to perform analysis on manufacturing processes, equipment, parameters to optimize manufacturing of Specialized products.
Job Responsibilities
A. Material Analysis and Material R&D Projects
1.Perform testing and measurement of product properties to certify products meet specifications, including Chemical composition, Grain size, Salt spray test, Weathering test, Mechanical properties of aluminum alloys, Coating properties test, and other material related testing.
2.Research and define material standard requirements for products, referring to applicable international standards of material specification, and define testing methods for validation. In-depth knowledge of aluminum and steel alloys is a requirement for this position.
3.Work with Design and Manufacturing teams to identify appropriate materials to achieve design requirements. Material knowledge should include but is not limited to aluminum, steels, aluminum alloys heat treatment principles and temper selection for aluminum alloys.
4.Work with 3rd party, Institution, or University to analyze items requiring OES, tensile tests, residual-stress measurement, SEM & EDS etc.
5.Search and review literature and industrial standards to support material analysis and R&D projects.
B. Manufacturer Development and Process Improvement
1.Conduct certification of suppliers’ heat treatment process using Heat Treatment System Assessment (HTSA) principles. Candidate shall be experienced with the heat treatment of aluminum including understanding of solid solution and artificial aging process. Candidates with experience and knowledge of steel heat treatments is preferred.
2.Evaluate finish coating process by suppliers to qualify partners who can meet internal requirements. Work with suppliers to establish technical specifications, callouts, and internal testing capability to correlate to Specialized testing. Candidates should have knowledge and experience of the Anodizing, Zinc Plating, ED, Electroless Nickel Plating.
3.Audit key suppliers’ processes, check potential issues, and correct them. Examples of processes you would need to audit include heat treatment, forging steps, extrusion, tube forming, and welding.
C. Engineering Team Continuous Improvement:
1.Work with engineering team to improve & document new processes and make our engineering team stronger. Hold internal training for specific material/surface finish topics to communicate material and process lesson learned.
2.Work on finding root causes of field return problems &/or manufacturing issues and suggest product improvements. Review past failure cases, write reports about the common failure modes, and deliver insights to Design, Manufacturing, and Quality teams.
3.Identify opportunities in ways of working to improve lab efficiency and day to day operations.
