About the Team

Sovrn offers a suite of products to allow independent creators to stay independent by making an income while serving their audience. Of these products, our Advertising Exchange is the oldest, largest, and probably the most complex. It operates at massive scale, in open market conditions, and with sophisticated counterparties.

The Exchange team has recently moved its entire architecture from hybrid cloud/bare metal to an entirely cloud-native environment. The migration was a success, with all major infrastructure now running in AWS. Our next challenges are to scale, harden, and make our product more performant and cost-efficient. We are also considering multi-cloud deployments.

The team is seeking an experienced cloud engineer to help us with the next phases of this exciting project.

About the Job

As a Senior Cloud Engineer you will have a pivotal role in building and maintaining our cloud systems, porting our systems to new regions and cloud environments, and continually optimizing the operations of those systems.

Some of our key tenets are low latency, high performance, sane architecture, observable systems, operational maturity, and a blameless culture of learning and improvement.

Cloud engineering includes deployment pipelines, software configuration management, infrastructure configuration management, containerization frameworks, monitoring, and performance engineering. You will bring experience with Site Reliability Engineering and DevOps transformation, implementation, and sustaining activities.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Helping manage a large (200B+ requests daily, petabyte-scale) application in the cloud
  • Evolving and improving our low-latency, high-performance architecture
  • Improving observability and cost-efficiency
  • Driving the maturity of our load balancing strategy Advocating for best practices for container management and tools
  • Guiding the evolution of cloud native practices, guidelines, patterns, and standards
  • Providing technical and architectural/vision alignment guidance and mentorship to other team members

About You

You are a self-starter and desire to work without micromanagement. You enjoy being part of a collaborative team but are also independently responsible. You are energized by technical challenges and solving problems with your team to make better software. You are security-minded and above all are excited about technology with an endless curiosity to learn.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience with distributed systems, microservices architecture, and cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Ability to lead problem definition, solution designs, and define implementation work plans
  • Experience with containers and orchestration (Kubernetes, EKS, Docker, Fargate)
  • Experience with automation configuration tools (Jenkins, Ansible, Terraform, Vault, etc.)
  • Experience deploying cloud services, monitoring, alerting, and handling critical issues
  • Familiarity and experience with L2/L3 networking, DNS, and HAProxy
  • Proficiency in BASH, Python, or other scripting languages
  • A creative yet analytical mindset with problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, agile environment
  • Technical curiosity and a desire for continuous learning
  • Ability to lead junior and experienced engineers to a common technical goal

Bonus Points:

  • Experience in ad tech, ad exchanges, SSPs, or related domains
  • Understanding of real-time bidding (RTB) protocols, ad serving technologies, and programmatic advertising
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator or Application Developer (CKA, CKAD)
  • Cloud Certifications (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Java experience
  • Experience with large scale, latency-sensitive systems
  • Full software development lifecycle experience
  • Experience with Cloud-based security protocols

Compensation and Benefits

In accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the approximate compensation range for this role in Boulder, Colorado is a base of $140,000 to $160,000, and eligibility for bonus compensation. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate's relevant work experience, skills and certifications.
