The SPLC is seeking an Investigative Reporter who is passionate about uncovering stories that advance human rights for all!
The Investigative Reporter writes news features and investigative reports to further the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)’s mission and goals.
Who You Are
Impactful & Strategic Storyteller. Skilled in framing investigative findings to support advocacy objectives, crafting compelling narratives that resonate with the public and policymakers, while using persuasive writing to inform, influence public opinion, and motivate action toward change.
Resilient and Adaptable. Ability to handle political and social pressure while remaining resilient, and to pivot the focus or angle of the investigation as new developments arise, ensuring the reporting stays relevant and aligned with advocacy goals.
Knowledgeable. Well-versed with social, economic, and political issues, including the needs and challenges of affected communities, and the ability to evaluate public policy, legislation, and regulations to identify areas for improvement or reform.

Ability to work respectfully with diverse communities to ensure their voices are heard while collaborating with media outlets to elevate advocacy stories, speak publicly to promote change, and manage potential backlash through transparent crisis communication, all while staying true to the journalistic mission.

What You'll Do
Write investigative news and features reports.
Research future long- and short-term story ideas to support the mission of SPLC and its various focus areas.
Collaborate with and support research team by filing requests, assisting with writing, fact-checking and editing articles.
Review and file information requests and local court documents.
Contact and interview sources and identify research to support SPLC’s mission through editorial content.
Participate in meetings and media engagements.
Coordinate with internal partners to create compelling, impactful content for media.
Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.
Minimum Qualifications

- Minimum 3 years of investigative journalism; and
- High School Diploma or GED.
Compensation & Benefits
This is an exempt role and the minimum starting salary is $73,832 annually. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Where & How You'll Work
This role has the following work designation options.
- Local Remote: Will work remotely, but is expected to attend work-related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.
- Telework: Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.
- This position will report to the Editorial Director.
Other Special Considerations
This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
This position is represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild.
