In this position, you will be a key part of our core team, at the forefront of taking next-generation chemistries and packaging them into advanced battery cells.

We are looking for a thoughtful and experienced Senior Chemist, with strong hands-on experience to join our team in the Bay Park area of San Diego, CA. The candidate will oversee building South 8’s chemical characterization capabilities including identifying vendors, developing detailed equipment specifications, purchasing, installing, and maintaining equipment. Candidate will also lead and train a small team for operation of the equipment. The ideal candidate would be able to use various chemical characterization techniques (ex., FTIR, Raman, GC-MS, etc.) to develop models to describe various chemical pathways in novel Liquefied Gas Electrolytes.

This role will involve developing detailed understanding of the relationships between material properties and electrochemical parameters to deliver high performance and safe next-generation batteries. The role will require close collaboration with the technical team taking initial observations and developing and understanding of underlying chemistry. The candidate will also support various tasks including distillation, purification, and interfacing with chemical suppliers. Candidates should have strong working knowledge of physical chemistry and characterization and extensive laboratory experience. Knowledge of high-pressure systems, chemical purification, or alkali metal, surface and electrolyte chemistry is desired.


  •  Lead procurement and operation of new chemical characterization equipment
  • Manage a small team to lead chemical characterization efforts to support battery development
  • Design research strategies for fundamental studies to guide the design and development of new electrolyte chemistries

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry
  • Deep working knowledge of chemical characterization techniques including, but not limited to, FTIR, Raman, GC-MS, XPS, SEM
  • Experienced in chemical synthesis, purification, and distillation techniques
  • Strong track record of achievements in materials R&D
  • Ability to lead a team to achieve research and development goals
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and succeed in an environment with competing demands
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic machining (ex. drill press, sanding)
  • Ability to lift 35 lbs
  • An aptitude for learning new things and a keen eye for improving processes
