THE ROLE

This team sits at the core of Sotheby’s business - auctions. It is responsible for the platform for the large marquee live auctions such as Freddy Mercury in 2023, the sealed bid auctions and more. It is also responsible for a number of the tools that go to getting an auction ready, in particular around cataloguing & readying consignments for sale. It’s an incredible opportunity to be innovating at the heart of largest destinations for art & luxury with some of the richest history. We are looking for an experienced engineering manager who can be both accountable for this critical team and help it continue to evolve and innovate.

This role is open to anywhere in the UK. You can work remotely from within the UK or work in a hybrid or in-office model from our London office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Builds and leads a product engineering team of 5-8 highly skilled and experienced software engineers positioned to drive Sotheby's auctions & cataloguing systems and services
  • Builds, optimizes, and maintains internal and consumer-facing tools
  • Leads a team focused on the design and build of elegant abstractions, shareable libraries, and robust APIs
  • Partners with IC’s and managers across design, user research, and engineers to test and ship features continuously
  • Actively looks for ways to improve the end-to-end experience for specialists across Sotheby's internal-facing product portfolio
  • Works closely with product managers leading the roadmap(s) and stakeholders across the company

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • 8+ years of industry engineering experience in a product-driven environment, ideally 2+ in a people management position
  • 3+ years focusing on full stack application development, technologies and platforms
  • Experience developing with functional programming languages. Preference for Scala experience, but any production and at-scale functional programming experience is great
  • Excellent communication skills both internally and externally
  • A team player that values opinions and empowers collaboration across functions and teams
  • Proactive, eager to learn, highly adaptable and comfortable dealing with ambiguity and a fast paced, ever changing environment
  • Intrinsically driven to innovate and to take initiative when seeing a process or a problem which could be improved upon
  • Eager to learn new technologies and open to learning from others
  • Must have proven experience writing, deploying, and running distributed systems
  • Experience in API design and writing microservices with clear separation of concerns
  • Must have experience with RDBMS such as Postgres or MySQL and writing migrations
  • Working knowledge of GraphQL and gRPC a plus
  • Working knowledge and experience with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS
  • Working knowledge of event-driven and other messaging queue systems
