The role purpose and scope:

  • Responsible for the overall development life cycle of the suite of products on Windows Enterprise systems 
  • Build and run an engineering team to develop the best technical design and deliver on high quality products.  
  • Work with the VP of engineering to define and drive a company-wide approach to product engineering.  
  • Instil best practices for software development, ensure designs meet requirements and deliver high-quality work on tight schedules. 
  • Partner with product management to plan features, priorities, and ensure timely releases of software builds. 
  • Be a champion of engineering excellence: establish team metrics for measurement of engineering and operational excellence. Implement a consistent, regular process for assessment and improvement. 
  • Show strong business and technical judgment that will accelerate time to market of releases, while incrementally moving our services towards the long-term vision. 
  • Recruit, mentor, and grow a large team of engineers, will need to interact with global customers. 
  • Work with people and recruiting functions to grow your teams. 

The Candidate 

12+ years overall experience in leading engineering teams in an enterprise SaaS organization / related technology segment with Microsoft Windows endpoint components.  Exposure to start-up ecosystem would be ideal.  

Strong technical foundation and acumen 

Superb technical knowledge with an engineering or technology background. Experience building and leading engineering teams, getting into technical details, and problem solving. One or more of the following required: 

  • Building Windows endpoint solutions 
  • Building kernel-mode Windows drivers 
  • Knowledge of Windows documented and undocumented internals (win32 system call interface, COM, interop APIs, etc.) 
  • Architecting, building, and debugging .NET, C++, C# 64/32 bit solutions on Windows

  • Identifies and leverages individual strengths and potential within the team. 
  • Identifies and mentors engineers to reinforce a strong engineering culture 
  • Works with recruiting and people functions to recruit additional engineers 
  • Engages the team in discussions around the longer-term strategy and how they can contribute. 
  • Delegates significant responsibilities to team members to free self to work on other priorities. 
  • Gives team members decision-making authority and accountability within their areas of responsibility. 
  • Invites the team to recommend ways to solve problems, discuss challenging issues, or generate new ideas. 

Experience and skills:  

  • BE. /B. Tech from a top university in India in one of the following departments (i) Computer Science, (ii) Information Sciences, (iii) Electrical Engineering, (iv) Electronics – or equivalent with an undergrad CGPA >= 7.00
  • 6–10 years of work experience overall, with a significant portion of it using programming languages like NET, C++, C# 64/32 bit solutions on Windows.
  • 1-2 years of experience leading three or more engineers in a formal leadership role or as a coach/mentor.
  • Experience in executing complex projects through the stages of planning, execution, and delivery to production.
  • Must have solved technical problems or designed for areas related to performance, scalability, and availability of systems in production.
  • Must have experience with cross-disciplinary teams like product management, program/release management, customer success etc., including effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Appreciation for superior design and architecture
  • Desire and endurance to solve complex problems in computer science in diverse fields
  • Experience with managing post-production activities like on-call rotations.

What Do We Evaluate for a Good Fit? 

  • Coding skills
    • Solve the stated problem using a reasonable design and approach
    • Produce idiomatic and production quality code using a programming language of your choice 
    • Use appropriate data structures and algorithms
    • Consider and discuss edge cases
  • Design and Architecture
    • Understand the requirements of the stated problem, asking clarifying questions if needed.
    • Define modular components of the system design with the right allocation of responsibilities
    • Define APIs, following sound API design principles, where appropriate
    • Make design trade-offs clearly and discuss them with the interviewer
    • Have an eye for requirements around performance, scalability, availability, operability, etc. The ability to produce back-of-the-envelope calculations would be ideal
    • Ability to discuss all the above with the interviewer as a workplace design discussion.
  • Technical leadership
    • Experience and learnings about working with cross-functional teams like product managers, stakeholders, QA leads, etc. to deliver features to production, including, the ability to make trade-offs as needed between timelines and scope.
    • Approach to maintaining the quality of a team’s output, including engineering practices like reviews, testing, managing technical debt, triaging issues from production, etc.
    • Approach to coaching and mentoring team members, including senior engineers.
