The Media, Technology, & Politics (MTP) cluster of programs at the SSRC advances research, connects scholars, and communicates knowledge surrounding the relationships between media, technology, and politics in an era of ubiquitous digital communication, uneven democratic participation, heightened polarization, and shifting institutional contexts. The MTP cluster includes the Social Data Initiative; the Media & Democracy, Anxieties of Democracy, Digital Culture, and Just Tech programs; and the MediaWell platform. The MTP Program Assistant will work most closely on the Social Data Initiative.
The Social Data Initiative (SDI) was launched to examine the impact of social media on society, explore questions about the responsible use of social network data, generate insights to inform policy at the intersection of media, technology, and democracy, and advance new avenues for future research. Through the Social Data Initiative, the SSRC serves as a bridge in an emergent social science ecosystem that increasingly requires collaborations among media and technology companies; municipal, state, and federal governments; philanthropy; and scholarly researchers. The Social Data Initiative enacts multifaceted pathways and methods for the study of social data, in order to build robust research on technology and society.
The MTP Program Assistant will work with the Program Director and program staff to organize, administer, and implement SDI fellowship programs. They will help manage the application and review process (including arranging peer-review meetings), fellowship award administration, and program-related outreach, including publications and events. The Program Assistant is also expected to handle many of the project’s administrative needs, such as event logistics, budget management, and travel arrangements. The Program Assistant will occasionally need to provide overall administrative support and assistance for related MTP programs when necessary.
The Program Assistant will also serve as the primary administrative coordinator for the Summer Institutes in Computational Social Science (SICSS). SICSS brings together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty for two weeks of cutting-edge training in computational social science. The SSRC provides administrative and fiscal support to the annual SICSS events run across the globe. The Program Assistant will assist with managing the SICSS partner location application process, onboard SICSS event organizers, oversee the payment process for event organizers and teaching assistants, create and maintain SICSS partner location web pages on the SICSS website, handle email correspondence with event organizers and participants, and perform other administrative duties for SICSS as needed.
This position requires energy; enthusiasm; strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills; and creativity, innovation, and flexibility. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in bridging social science and/or humanities research with computational methods and/or data science.
● Support Program Director and program staff with administration of fellowship and research projects.
● Serve as the first point of contact for fellows, committee members, external web developers, and representatives of partner institutions and organizations.
● Manage program databases and application processing for fellowship competitions and other calls for participation.
● Organize virtual, on- and off-site peer-review meetings, advisory board meetings, workshops, and other events. This includes handling logistics including booking domestic and international travel, preparing meeting agendas and other relevant meeting materials, and coordinating and facilitating correspondence with participants and all relevant constituents during workshops and meetings.
● Represent the program at internal and external meetings, briefings, and conferences; take notes and present information to groups as needed.
● Actively contribute to external promotion of program outputs.
● Support team in managing program budgets; contribute to draft grant narrative reports.
● Oversee payment processing for fellows and vendors.
● Contribute more broadly to the efforts of the Social Data Initiative, or other SSRC programs, as needed.
● A bachelor's degree, with interest in the social sciences, humanities, data science, or related fields.
● Superior organizational skills, with ability to multitask and prioritize daily activities to meet competing deadlines.
● Strong attention to detail.
● Strong interpersonal skills.
● Excellent written and oral communication skills, including solid presentation skills.
● High level of proficiency in all MS Office applications, as well as database and internet applications.
● High level of proficiency with communications technology and social media.
● Demonstrated interest in fields that bridge social science and/or humanities research with computational methods.
● Experience with website maintenance. Experience with GitHub a plus.
● Ability to travel in the United States and occasionally abroad.
● Experience in maintaining expense accounts and budgeting.
TERMS, SALARY AND BENEFITS
Annual salary is $40K.
