The SSRC seeks to hire a Program Officer to support the development and implementation of a digital platform on religion in international affairs and agenda-setting activities on this topic, while also supporting other aspects of the SSRC’s work.

Since 2007, the Council’s Program on Religion and the Public Sphere has developed a range of projects that seek to foster engagement and cooperation among social scientists and others by supporting new and innovative scholarship and elevating the quality of both academic and public discussion. In partnership with the Program Directors for the Religion and the Public Sphere program, the Program Officer will play a key role in the Program’s development of a new digital platform that will serve as a resource for researchers, educators, journalists, practitioners, and members of the public on the ways in which religion shapes, and is shaped by, international relations and the transnational flows of people and ideas. Additionally, the Program Officer will support and mobilize working groups and networks to address new topics and shape future research agendas on these topics. Support for this project is provided by the Henry Luce Foundation.

Responsibilities 

In partnership with supervisors, the Program Officer will:

  • Oversee the development and management of a new digital platform on religion in international affairs, including aggregating research and related content on these critical global issues, coordinating literature reviews on key themes, and curating new content from leading scholars and journalists.
  • Working with the editorial associate, oversee the editorial and publishing process of material on the digital platform.
  • Coordinate with the editorial team of The Immanent Frame, the SSRC’s high-profile blog on religion, secularism, and the public sphere, to ensure continuity between platforms, and to plan for how the platforms will evolve in mutually beneficial ways.
  • Assemble and then liaise with the project’s advisory committee of leading scholars working on religion in international affairs to identify key areas for future research.
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate events, including advisory committee meetings, thematic working group meetings, workshops, and other field-building opportunities. This includes preparing meeting agendas, drafting and editing concept notes and event summary notes, and coordinating and facilitating correspondence with participants and all relevant stakeholders during workshops and meetings.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among a wide and interdisciplinary group of researchers and other members of the programs’ networks.
  • Develop and manage project and program proposals and budgets and write grant reports for donors.
  • Support new program development and funding proposals for national and international activities to support the goals of the project and the Religion and the Public Sphere program, more broadly.
  • Work with other SSRC staffers involved in online platforms, learning from their experiences and contributing to SSRC’s broader ambitions in creating digital research resources.
  • Contribute more broadly to the efforts of the Religion and the Public Sphere program, depending upon interest and capacity.

Qualifications 

  • PhD in one of the social sciences, the humanities, or a closely related field (religious studies, communication, sociology, political science, history, anthropology, etc.) required.
  • Substantial knowledge and research experience in the area of religion in international affairs, as well as awareness and knowledge about relevant global issues, trends, and the research fields and researchers that address them.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, especially for the purpose of translating academic research to a broader audience.
  • Experience organizing and moderating workshops, meetings, and conference panels.   
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proven ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Team player with demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, and respond flexibly to changing demands.
  • Interest in working in a professional role at the interface between different scholarly communities, and between the academic and practitioner and public audiences.
  • Experience in the management, curating, or editing of an online platform or journal is highly
  • Program management, grant writing, and budgeting experience is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience in web development preferred.

Terms, Salary and Benefits 

Annual salary will be commensurate with experience. This is a grant-funded position, and renewal is based on successful performance and availability of funding. Provisions are made for professional staff to continue their development as a scholar while at the Council.

This position is based out of the Brooklyn, NY office and as such conforms to the general operating hours of the SSRC standard workweek.
