The SSRC seeks an Associate to work in its Communications Department. The Communications Department works to promote the SSRC and its mission through public-facing digital and print initiatives that include (but are not limited to) microsites, brochures, banners, e-newsletters, social media campaigns, and A/V digital media. The Communications Associate will work closely with Communications, Editorial, and IT staff to assist in the management and production of these outputs. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated creative project management experience, outstanding interpersonal skills for working with a variety of stakeholders and actors both internally and externally, a background in print and online content production, and a strong understanding of user experience and content strategy principles.


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience coordinating/developing creative projects.
  • Strong understanding of graphic design principles. Experience working with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop applications).
  • Technical capacity to support web content management on a variety of platforms. Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Ability to manage and work with freelancers and consultants on project basis as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Comfortable in an academic/nonprofit environment, with the ability to work with a wide range of professionals and personalities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Valued Experience Includes:

  • WordPress content management system; direct web development and UX skills a plus.
  • Familiarity with digital content strategy and related marketing techniques. 
  • Familiarity with producing and editing multimedia materials for audio/video-related web content.


  • Serve as a key point of contact for program staff accessing creative Communications services.
  • Provide design quality control and ensure consistency of SSRC brand across print and digital materials.
  • Project manage print and digital initiatives for both institutional and program needs. Demonstrated ability to both manage long-term projects and react nimbly to unexpected opportunities.
  • Assist managing content and presentation on the Council website (and related satellite sites); this includes (but is not limited to) layout design, content development/revision, graphics development/fine-tuning and quality control.
  • Design and execute e-newsletter campaigns for both the Council and program staff.
  • Participate in strategic planning for SSRC websites and other digital communications.
  • Perform usability testing and user experience analysis to promote the continual improvement of SSRC websites.
  • Provide digital media management for video, audio, and photography.
  • Cultivate and maintain vendor relationships with printers, web developers, graphic designers, etc., for creative project needs.
  • Assist with documentation, training of staff on SSRC communications systems, and internal process management for the Communications team as needed.
  • Additional responsibilities and projects as directed, depending on interest and capacity.
