Smart Design is looking for a personable Business Development Manager to help lead the NY business development strategy and roll-up his/her sleeves to execute against it. The ideal candidate is a consultative business development leader and relationship manager who’s responsible for making sure that both client and Smart view their relationship as mutually beneficial. This role spans across client categories including digital user experience, physical product design and service innovation.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Own the overall BD process: inbounds, needs assessment, opportunity framing, proposal development, and statement of work creation (partnering with project managers) to close business. This person knows how and when to partner with colleagues to move opportunities and relationships forward.
  • Quickly gain an understanding of clients’ needs, strategies, product & service offerings, and decision-making structures to help teams successfully capitalize on these learnings at every stage of the BD process.
  • Work with Executive leaders and Marketing Director to create and execute new business plans for the New York studio including the establishment of industry target profiles, prospecting, and assignment of internal content leads to appropriate verticals. Devise and own the outbound BD tactics:
    • Identify and suggest trade shows, speaking opportunities, etc., to develop new business contacts working with Marketing
    • Stay abreast of industry happenings and interesting items in the press to leverage as outreach for potential opportunities
    • Determine travel cadence for new business purposes
    • Facilitate outbound new business proposal process, securing new work to hit pre-established targets
  • Work collaboratively with dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams to provide overall account leadership.
  • Advise team on how to build long-term relationships with senior level executives and position Smart Design as a trusted advisor.
  • Manage a business development team. 
 
NATURALLY, YOU HAVE
  • MUST HAVE 8+ years of business development and/or client engagement experience in creative professional services firm (ideally design, strategy or management consulting).
  • Strong reputation for creating mutually beneficial relationships with senior level executives and other stakeholders across organizations of varying size and complexities.
  • Thrives in a self-directed role, but understands that successful collaboration with teams is critical to success.
  • Proven ability to develop and close new opportunities and to grow relationships up and across large organizations.
  • Experience articulating and securing large scale strategic design projects.
  • Polished, persuasive and consultative writing and presentation abilities.
  • Prior experience in a design or strategy practitioner role a plus. 
  • Ability to travel as needed, 25% on average.
