Assistant Controller

About the role

SmartBear is looking for an Assistant Controller to join our Controllership team and play a critical role in scaling our financial function. The Assistant Controller will be instrumental in leading the day-to-day accounting while also influencing the strategy and direction of the team. This includes developing and implementing policies, procedures, and driving continuous improvement. This is a perfect role for a financial leader who will thrive in a dynamic and fast-growing environment. The Assistant Controller will report to the SVP, Corporate Controller and oversee the Corporate Accounting team.


As the Assistant Controller you will:

  • Manage and develop a high performing team of accounting professionals, promoting a culture of continuous improvement
  • Manage the global monthly closing cycle, including oversight of reconciliations and financial reporting and partnership with FP&A on managerial reporting
  • Manage the accounting and financial operations for a complex multi-entity, multi-currency global company including areas of consolidation, revenue, general ledger, treasury, payroll, payables, capitalized software, intercompany, debt and equity while ensuring compliance with US GAAP, local accounting requirements and internal policies
  • Lead financial related audits and partner with the Tax Director to support tax related audits
  • Build meaningful and trusted relationships with key internal stakeholders across business units and functions  
  • Continuously review and enhance financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and systems to align with best practices and evolving business needs
  • Support new business initiatives and other major change management impacting financial statements and related systems
  • Manage the preparation of revenue and cash forecasts in collaboration with FP&A to support the planning and execution of financial strategies and company objectives
  • Lead the accounting research process and interpretation of US GAAP guidance for key accounting and reporting areas; partner with business leaders on impacts of conclusions and how they may drive business decisions
  • Other duties as assigned

We are looking for you if you have:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in related field of Accounting and/or Finance
  • 10+ years of progressive financial management experience
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
  • Mix of public accounting and industry experience preferred
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, ideally in a SaaS environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly detailed oriented and organized in work, willingness to roll-up the sleeves
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively with different levels of employees across an organization
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities 
  • Proven experience leading and motivating teams
  • This role is based hybrid out of Somerville, MA. Candidates should be local and within commutable distance
