Summary 

skyTran is looking for a highly motivated individual who will be designing and modelling control systems for our transformational, high-speed, magnetic levitation vehicle. You will be working on the development of control systems across a wide range of vehicle and levitation subsystems. You will be involved in the development of models and simulation of our next generation vehicles and control systems. The candidate has experience implementing controllers using various control design techniques. They have a solid grasp of linear system theory while being hands-on, this allows them to juggle mathematical models and physical implementation. They are comfortable brainstorming ideas and providing critical thinking in a multi-disciplinary environment. 

 

Job Description 

  • Design of control laws for levitation in 5 degrees of freedom 
  • Scripting and simulation in MATLAB/Simulink 
  • 3D modelling of rigid bodies (kinematics with rotation matrices) 
  • Modelling of sensor, actuators, and plant uncertainty 
  • Writing detailed reports with mathematical derivations and results 
  • Ensuring appropriate conversion of control algorithms to embedded C for testing on rig 
  • Identifying discrepancies between simulation results and physical implementation 
  • Testing design against tolerance requirements and providing requirements to other disciplines 
  • Suggesting topology improvements for sensing and actuation 
  • State-Estimators and Kalman filter design 
  • Writing and automating tests 
  • Working with modeling team to integrate models and algorithms into a high-fidelity simulation environment 
  • Keeping scripts, models, design, and documentation under version control 

 

Desired Qualifications 

  • MS or PhD degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Mechatronics Engineering, with an emphasis in controls or robotics. 
  • 8+ years of experience in control development and modelling 

 

Preferred Experience 

  • Solid linear system theory 
  • Frequency-based and state-space design 
  • MIMO (H2, H-infinity) controller design in the aerospace, robotics, drones, mechatronics, or similar industries 
  • Non-linear control design: gain-scheduling, feedback linearization, sliding mode 
  • System identification  
  • Modal analysis, vibrations 
  • Programming in C/C++ and/or Python
