Senior News Editor
Military Times is hiring a senior news editor to fill a critical role in the newsroom, providing oversight and management of copy inflow via staff, bureaus and wires. This editor will assist in crafting the print publications to reflect deeper analysis and immersive content. The Pentagon and Capitol Hill bureau chiefs and Military Times Early Bird Editor will work closely with this editor in planning daily reports, enterprise and cover stories. The editor will execute on a number of key projects throughout the year to include special reports on military pay and benefits and military healthcare.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter, multitasker and clear communicator who is dedicated to informing those in uniform while striving to enhance the American public’s understanding of military affairs and important national security issues. He or she must be focused and decisive during breaking news events, and adept at spotting the trends that yield deep, meaningful enterprise.
Job duties include:
Editing web stories and developing multimedia packages with slideshows and videos.
Rewriting headlines for added punch, viral potential.
Searching AP and other wires for pickups and story ideas for service-specific editors/reporters.
Assisting in production and distribution of newsletters.
Curating our sister HistoryNet publications (a collection of magazines dedicated to military history)/
Developing print editions of Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times.
Assisting in the production of special multimedia reports.
Writing editorials for online and in print.
Qualifications: At least five years of editing and/or reporting experience, and familiarity with military affairs.
