Military Times and Defense News seek a Live Event Lead/Multimedia Producer to help expand and enhance our multimedia efforts. This is a dual-hatted role that puts primary focus on leading and improving our suite of live streaming video events, which are a combination of studio production, virtual guests and pre-produced packages, and creating content for our various platforms. Between events, the candidate will serve as an all-purpose video news producer, shooting, editing and posting videos for Defense News and Military Times.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in live streaming event production, including, primarily, live switching programs, and have a strong command of all the tools of a live production. In best circumstances, this is built on an overall video production skillset, with experience shooting and editing video.

  • Live Event/Streaming Production:
Each year, Defense News and Military Times host a series of live-streamed events – the primary focus of this role would be to act as the lead producer and switcher operator for each of those productions.

This includes working with working with other departments to prep and script a show, and conduct rehearsals as needed. The Live Event Lead is also the lead switching operator, helming the controls for the events using our chosen software, Livestream Studio 6. Our events are both in-studio and conducted from remote locations, and the event lead should be prepared to successfully produce and switch both.

The Live Event Lead should be well versed in how to bring in virtual guests, and produce high-end streams complete with graphics, insets, text and associated media. In short, this candidate is in charge of a series of high-profile live streams involving VIPs in the military and defense spaces, with sponsors included.
  • Multimedia Production
The second role of this position is to work as an all-purpose video producer, shooting and editing packages for Military Times and Defense News weekly as directed by the producers.

This includes the basic toolkit of video production:
    • Ability to shoot video packages in-studio and in the field/on location with proper lighting and sound.
    • Ability to edit stories and packages using Adobe Premiere Pro.
    • Ability to write/script as needed to create a well-rounded package
  • Other Weekly Show Support
As a small team with a high output, the Live Event Lead/Multimedia Producer will also be expected to assist the Video team as needed to create our weekly show, Defense News Weekly. This may include everything from assisting other producers in the field to editing daily social videos to manning a camera for host reads – each person on the team supports the others to get the weekly 30-minute product created and sent for distribution.

This is a challenging and fast-paced role that includes the requisite pressures of live-event streaming, and requires the temperament and skills required to ensure success in this realm. The ability to learn on the job and absorb new skills quickly is key.

Experience switching live shows is an absolute must, even if it is on software different from our typical platform, Livestream Studio. This is a new and high-growth area for Defense News / Military Times and finding ways to enhance and evolve our productions is central to the role.
