Military Times and Defense News seek a Digital Producer to lead our online video efforts. This is a multifaceted role that requires the right talent to generate daily news video, appear on camera and be a fast and efficient editor. The Digital Producer will also handle all upload and distribution of all the video team’s content, with the goals of maximizing exposure and creating growth across social platforms, and track relevant analytics.
Secondarily, the Digital Producer will support all Video operations, including production of our show, Defense News Weekly, and live stream events.
The ideal candidate will have a background in news and creating video for digital distribution, with an all-around skillset that includes the ability to write, shoot and edit their own content, and utilize best-practices for distribution. A functional understanding of the U.S. military and defense spaces is helpful, but not required.
- Content Creation
On a day-to-day basis, provide our audience with visual stories. These will come in two basic forms: news videos, and regular series, which can span a breadth of topics and tones. For the former, a sound news judgement and sense of what works online are key. For the latter, there is wide latitude for ideas and experimentation.
As mentioned above, the producer must be able to handle all elements of creating a video, from finding and sourcing stories, to writing scripts to editing or shooting any additional footage if needed, with proper lighting and audio collection.
- On-Camera Presence
One of the roles of this position is to host digital series, and act as an on-camera talent for Defense News Weekly, either as an in-studio host, or a reporter in the field. For all instances, comfort and experience in front of the camera is critical, and for field reporting, an understanding of the basics of a broadcast package is a must-have.
- Upload and Distribution
A key part of this role is to act as Military Times/Defense News’ point person on staying at the front-end of industry best practices for digital distribution. A keen understanding of the terrain and ability to use the relevant tools to maximize views and impressions for every video the team produces is central to this role.
As a Digital Producer, this person will upload videos to various CMS and social media platforms, and generate copy and thumbnails to accompany videos and stories.
To track what efforts are working best this candidate will also need to track analytics to be able to report to the team what is performing, and what is not.
- Weekly Show Support
The greater MT/DN Video team’s primary objective is the creation of our half-hour weekly television show, Defense News Weekly. As a small team, all members, including the Digital Producer, must support the production as needed. This may take the form of hosting part of the show, producing packages in the field or performing on-camera interviews of sources or DN/MT reporters.
- Live Event Production Support
A requirement of the Digital Producer will be to learn and be able to operate our live-switching software, Livestream Studio. Live event production is a pillar of the video team’s responsibilities and all members need to be able to switch live, virtual and hybrid events, and provide support to Live Event principals as needed. This can be taught on the job.
This is a highly challenging and fast-paced role that requires a jack-of-all-trades experience set and suite of multimedia capabilities. Knowledge of Adobe products and Premiere Pro are required. The ability to learn on the job and absorb new skills quickly is key.
