Military Times is hiring a reporter to fill a critical role covering the military services and overseas operations around the world. This reporter will assist in daily news coverage for the Military Times’ websites as well as crafting magazine-style enterprise and investigative stories for the bi-weekly news magazine that is distributed in print to military communities worldwide. The reporter may also play a key role in our expanding video production efforts.
This position requires both immediate reporting of breaking news, as well as consistent work on a handful of longer-term projects that will include both individual and team-reporting assignments, a strong work ethic, as well as time management and organizational skills are all necessary. Prior military service is a plus, but is not required. A detailed understanding of the military community is strongly preferred.
This reporter’s beat may include coverage of the Pentagon, the military services’ leadership and culture, personnel policies, military criminal justice and overseas operations along with their geopolitical issues that affect them.
The ideal candidate is an experienced reporter, a self-starter, multitasker and clear communicator who is dedicated to informing those in uniform while striving to enhance the American public’s understanding of military affairs and important national security issues. He or she must be focused and decisive during breaking news events, and adept at spotting the trends that yield deep, meaningful enterprise.

- Source-driven beat coverage that prioritizes exclusive and timely news relevant to service members.
- Developing and executing ideas for covers stories examining timely issues relevant to service members.
- Working with the multi-media team to identify and execute video-based projects for both short and long-term coverage
Required Functional & Technical Qualifications:
- At least two years of reporting experience, with familiarity of military affairs.
- Experience in online and multi-media production.
- Strong knowledge of social media for use as both a reporting tool and a publishing platform.
- A history of using Freedom of Information Act requests, as well as working informally with government agencies to acquire information, is beneficial.
