Team/Department Description:

The Auctane Platform Services team is responsible for the overall strategy, performance and architecture of Auctane platform which powers the range of Auctane products, including ShipStation, Stamps.com, ShipEngine, ShippingEasy, ShipWorks, Endicia, MetaPack, and Shipsi. The platform provides the scalable services, technologies, and integrations that enables billions of shipments annually for commerce clients of all sizes.

 Strategic Imperative:

The Director, Engineering is a critical role overseeing teams responsible for the development of all platform services related to inventory and integrated logistics capabilities. The role oversees a development team responsible for implementing Auctane’s mesh logistics solutions that bridges complex integrations between accounts, data processes and flows between Auctane merchants, warehouse suppliers and 3rd party vendors.

 Primary Objectives:

  1. Staff Management, Coaching, Career Development and Hiring.
  2. Manage Sprint development cycle in collaboration with product and engineering leads, including incorporating and balancing technical roadmap deliverables alongside product initiatives.
  3. Advise the team on developing Scalable, Secure, Supportable Systems, Applications and Integrations.
  4. Advocate and drive adoption of platform technologies across Auctane go to market products.
  5. Optimizations of the SDLC, such as Continuous Improvement of the CI/CD Pipeline.

Secondary Objectives:

  1. Evaluation of external software solutions, while conducting build vs buy analysis
  2. Participate in business discussions and brainstorming and deconstruct business problems into technical solutions
  3. Document or support the team in documenting technical solutions for enterprise, non-technical colleagues

Essential Position Duties (typical monthly, weekly, daily tasks which support the primary objectives):

  • Management of several software development teams including server, client, database, web, and more as new areas of development are pursued.
  • Coaching and development of the software development management staff including best practices in areas such as coaching, hiring, process engineering and performance review
  • Overseeing the development initiatives so that releases meet internal standards for quality, responsiveness, and time to market.
  • Providing technical recommendations for the company’s tool and technology choices including things like development platforms.
  • Interfacing with Product to fully understand functional requirements of proposed products and features.
  • Providing technical expertise to fully support the company’s IP portfolio and analyze that of other companies in the industry.
  • Encouraging and participating in the innovation of new technologies and products that result in patent applications.
  • Strong communicator with the capacity to present company and functional specifics to all levels.
  • Work cross-functionally across the company to collaborate, plan, and execute on goals
  • Coordinate with product managers and designers to define and execute on new product experiences

Required Education and/or Experience:                                                  

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent experience.
  • Eight or more (8+) years software development experience.
  • Minimum of Two (2) years’ experience managing or leading a team of at least five (5) engineers, including conducting architecture or code reviews, performance evaluations.
  • A minimum of 3 years of fulfillment logistic experience (involving work with 3PL systems, dropship ship networks, product catalog/inventory, or reverse logistics).
  • Successful delivery of production applications.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to fully understand the system architecture and communicate specific details about it to team members as needed.

  • Strong understanding of SQL, relational database systems (SQL Server and PostgreSQL), and ORM frameworks. Familiarity with stored procedures & replication technologies.
