The Auctane Design team is responsible for the award-winning user experience of our portfolio of products. We use our unique skills to uncover latent customer needs, solve complex problems, and align our cross-functional teams around solutions. We work collaboratively with product teams to shape, envision, and execute solutions. Our end goal is to discover insights, help shape the product, and create quality work with impact that has lasting value for our customers and our company. The Director of Experience Design will help us build the right thing the right way. Leading candidates will have deep consumer and/or SaaS design experience both as a manager and an individual contributor. You have a demonstrated ability to create real value from design. You are an elegant problem solver. You and your teams build things that give people superpowers by making the complex simple and magical. This role will report to the Head of Design at Auctane. This role will be focused on improving, growing, and proliferating design systems across all Auctane brands as well as overseeing and enabling Auctane’s design research approaches and methodologies. You’ll be responsible for pioneering strategies and building the roster for our emerging Auctane Design Systems and Research team, a cross-disciplinary group of designers, UX researchers, content designers, and architects responsible for providing tools, frameworks, and processes that provide consistent foundations for our product design and development teams. 

This position is an onsite position in Austin, TX.


  • Work to pioneer strategy, establish a vision and build a team for Auctane Design Systems.
  • Help establish the team, define the workflows for, and then lead all design research activities across key product areas.
  • Through feedback and engagement, lead the design team to an overall increase in quality and consistency.
  • Serve as an overall design leader, mentor and provide feedback to the design, product, and engineering teams regarding ongoing work.

Essential Position Duties (typical monthly, weekly, daily tasks which support the primary objectives):

  • Identify, build, and/or refine operational frameworks, tools, workflows, and communications for Auctane Design Systems.
  • Work extremely closely with global leads across Product, Design and Engineering to establish the processes, documentations and strategies needed to drive product quality
  • You bring a highly collaborative spirit and are the model for how design is “greasing the gears” across the organization. You always move urgently with common sense and lead others to do the same, finding answers or facilitating decisions is second nature, not a blocker.
  • You are always looking for the best way to build and retain a team; staffing, utilization, effectiveness, individual growth, empowerment and celebration are all things you focus on with your team members, direct and in-direct.
  • Last but not least, you will be able to quickly understand and adapt to multiple design and product team processes and roadmaps across the globe.

Education and/or Experience:                                                     

  • Bachelor's degree in Art, Design, HCL, UX or related field, or equivalent years’ experience. 
  • Ten or more (10+) years work experience as a product or UX designer.
  • Five or more (5+) years as a director or design team lead.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of design disciplines (user-centered design, layout, information architecture, typography / layout, UX patterns).
  • Collaborative working style. 
  • Excellent communications skills. 
  • Understand how completed designs can be distilled down into individual elements.
  • Explain and show how patterns can be used across an enterprise, along with seeing potential for future iterations or improvements.
  • Understand UI best practices, standards and nomenclature and how they contrast and overlap.
  • Understand and interpret brand and business needs and transform them into innovative, creative and results-oriented digital solutions.
  • Customer focused: You're always looking for ways to know more about your users including both qualitative and qualitative methods for gathering data and feedback.
  • Organized: can deliver to expectations with little intervention.
  • Listens, gets clarification, and takes where necessary to record key decisions; Asks questions to help clarify ambiguity; Writes clearly and informatively; Able to read and interpret written information.

  • You are proficient in all the tools you need to get any job done, and capable of adapting to new tools easily.
