Role Description: 

The role of a Data Engineer III in Finance and Accounting at ShipBob involves a multifaceted set of responsibilities aimed at enhancing and maintaining the integrity, accuracy, and accessibility of financial data within the company.  

As a Senior Member of the team, you will: 

  • Data Warehouse Management: You'll play a crucial role in managing and optimizing the data warehouse system. This includes ensuring its performance, reliability, and scalability to meet the needs of the accounting and finance teams. You'll be responsible for the integration of various data sources into the warehouse, maintaining the data pipeline, and ensuring that the data is up-to-date and accurate. 
  • Supporting Financial Operations: You will assist the accounting and finance teams in their daily operations by providing them with the data they need to perform tasks such as financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting. Your role will be critical in closing the books at various intervals, including monthly, quarterly, and annually, ensuring that financial reporting deadlines are met with accuracy and efficiency. 
  • Data Quality and Improvement: A significant part of your job will involve identifying and implementing improvements in the data collection, storage, and retrieval processes. You'll work to enhance the quality of the data in the warehouse, making it more accessible and useful for the finance and accounting teams. This may involve developing new reports or improving existing ones, optimizing data models, and ensuring data consistency across the organization. 
  • Collaboration and Communication: You'll collaborate closely with team members within the finance and accounting departments to understand their data requirements and challenges. This will involve translating complex financial concepts and needs into technical solutions, as well as explaining data-related issues in a way that non-technical staff can understand. 
  • Innovation and Automation: You will identify opportunities for automating manual processes within the finance and accounting workflows, leveraging your technical skills to create solutions that streamline operations, reduce errors, and improve efficiency. 
  • Regulatory Compliance and Security: Ensuring compliance with financial regulations and maintaining the security of financial data will be an essential aspect of your role. You'll implement and maintain data governance practices to protect sensitive information and comply with relevant laws and standards. 
  • Staying Current: As a senior data engineer, you'll need to keep up with the ever evolving productions system.  Learn what changes necessitate updates to the Data Warehouse and the ETL process that moves data there.   

 

What you’ll do:

● Focus on growing as a data engineer in an Azure SQL/ Synapse environment.

● Performing SQL programming and performance tuning in RDBMS and Data Warehouse.

● Capable of taking well-defined sub-tasks and completing these tasks.

● Create Power BI visualizations and paginated reports.

● Model and implement RDBMS database solutions in Azure SQL.

● Modeling and implementing data warehouse models and ETL in Azure Synapse.

● Effective in communicating status to the team.

● Exhibits ShipBob’s core values, focuses on understanding and living these values.

● Accepts feedback graciously and learns from everything they do.

● Other duties/responsibilities as necessary.

What you’ll bring to the table:

● 6-9 years of experience, including 5+ years of Azure SQL administration, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.

● Excellent problem-solving skills.

● Excellent T-SQL (MS SQL) skills.

● Azure Synapse Analytics (Azure Datawarehouse) experience.

● Excellent communication skills.

● Performance oriented mindset.

● Ability to work quickly and collaboratively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

● Demonstrated experience in the following:

  • Azure SQL
  • Performance Tuning and Optimization (Azure SQL/ Azure Synapse)
  • Data Modeling (both RDBMS and Data Warehouse)
  • Azure SQL Administration, including Security
  • Power BI
  • Azure Data Factory
  • Azure DevOps

ShipBob believes in transparency while providing a competitive total compensation package with a pay for performance approach. We are targeting a salary range of $119,060 - $158,746 for this role. The full base pay range for this position in our architecture is $119,060 - $198,433.
