Reporting directly to Burroughs, the Vice President of Engineering will serve as a key member of the Sense Photonics executive team. The primary charter of the role will involve leading product design and development, which includes high-speed, high-power electrical design, thermal management, optical design, algorithm development, mechanical design and full stack software development, as well as working with the company’s foundry and contract manufacturing partners to successfully introduce new products into volume manufacture. Sense Photonics’ technology development strategy is centered on finding “real world problems” in highly automated environments that can be solved by state-of-the-art LiDAR systems. Solving these problems will involve the Vice President of Engineering leading product development efforts, including hardware and software, within the company while closely partnering with the Chief Technology Officer, who is focused on advanced technology; the operations team, which will be built over time and will manages external manufacturing partnerships; and market development team. This individual will have fundamental responsibility for developing and delivering products that meet market requirements with an emphasis on designing for both cost, usability, and manufacturability.
The Vice President of Engineering will need to build out and lead a multidisciplinary engineering team and will be tasked with meeting the company’s ambitious development milestones. This individual will have to gain the respect and confidence of a team of highly accomplished and motivated engineers, while building out the technology team further with a diverse talent mix in terms of experience-level and background.
The Vice President of Engineering will need to instill a high degree of technical discipline and rigor in the organization, solve technical problems as they arise, deliver against milestones on time, and create world class products with an emphasis on quality, reliability, and cost. This will be achieved through creating a formal development process and instilling a culture of continuous improvement. It is crucial that this individual be able to act as both a strategic leader of the product development team, as well as having the tactical capability to execute and contribute to the overall direction of the company. Vice President of Engineering will be expected to articulate product development plans to both internal and external constituencies, including other members of the management team, customers, partners and prospects as well as Sense Photonics’ Board, investors, and advisors.
Specific additional responsibilities for the Vice President of Engineering will include:
- Providing a viable development path for Sense Photonics’ products and future product generations;
- Establishing the tone and technical culture of the organization (i.e., business vs. research lab, team vs. individual);
- Providing inspirational leadership in managing all engineering projects and teams and ensuring that they remain within budget, scope and schedule requirements;
- Creating and maintaining documentation and processes to track, measure and archive progress again milestones; and
- Establishing infrastructure and resources for training new members of the technical team.
At a professional level, we are seeking an individual with a minimum of fifteen years of experience, at least half of which should have involved direct managerial experience. This individual must have a demonstrable track record of success managing multi-disciplinary product development teams through the full life-cycle of product development. This track record should include developing disruptive products that combine hardware and software and taking those products from conception or near conception through the testing cycle to manufacturing and market success. The individual should have a track record of building/growing teams and recruiting world-class engineering talent. While some exposure to LiDAR systems would be viewed favorably, it is not a prerequisite. What is required is someone with a successful track record of designing and developing advanced system level products involving optics, high-speed electronics, detector arrays, thermal management, software, etc. For example, someone coming from the robotics, industrial automation, autonomous vehicle, optical communications, and/or consumer electronics markets could be relevant. The preference would be for this individual to have had exposure to both corporate and entrepreneurial environments.
At a personal level, the Vice President of Engineering must be a strong leader and manager, as well as having an orientation toward hands-on execution. This individual must possess an inspiring level of passion and energy for their work as these characteristics will foster the positive, can-do culture of Sense Photonics. It is expected that this individual will provide both technical discipline and thought leadership to the company in the area of product and process development. This individual will need to be in possession of a high level of self-motivation, coupled with a strong work ethic and the desire to build and grow an organization. It is imperative that this individual be in possession of a highly evolved set of communication skills, which will facilitate effective communication with the rest of the senior management team as well as various external constituencies.
At an educational level, we are seeking an individual with a minimum of an undergraduate degree in a technical discipline such as optical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, etc. A technical master’s degree, as well as a Ph.D. in a similar field are not necessary but would certainly be viewed favorably. It is understood, however, that education, while important as an indicator of character, intellectual ability and achievement, will be subordinate to personal qualities and professional accomplishments as variables in the selection of process.
