 Position:  Director of Agronomy & Landscaping   

Salary Range: $134K to $185K (based on experience)

 Location: Rancho Mirage, CA 

 Reporting: General Manager

Position Description: 

The primary role of the Golf Course & Landscaping Superintendent is the oversight of the golf course maintenance and related facilities at Sensei Porcupine Creek. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, turf grass and plant material maintenance and overseeding programs, property asset management, golf course personnel management, budget and forecasting, financial management of golf course maintenance operations, scheduling and maintenance of irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance with regulatory issues. The Golf Course & Landscaping Superintendent works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, members, guests and the property. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for all phases of Golf Course Maintenance, Agronomic and Landscape operations, cost control, and personnel 
  • Work closely with, advise, and coordinate with the General Manager on any issues related to golf course maintenance and landscape operations 
  • Manage the Golf Course and Landscape Operations in a fiscally responsible and professional manner 
  • Oversee the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and wetlands on the golf course and property overall including landscaped and non-landscaped areas and trees 
  • Direct and assist the staff on the maintenance of the golf course and overall landscaping, planting of new vegetation, replacement, spraying, pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs, and tending meticulously to high usage areas 
  • Oversee third party landscaping company 
  • Work closely with ownership approved Landscape Design company 
  • Manage an accurate water usage tracking plan and irrigation systems and provide monthly reporting on the maintenance of Golf Course & Landscape Operations 
  • Provide technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA, safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions 
  • Train and oversee staff in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment 
  • Supervise and participate in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations 
  • Supervise and control all maintenance expenses associated with Golf Course Maintenance and Landscaping Operations, including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers 
  • Develop annual operating budget and plans for maintenance and capital improvement projects of Gold Course and Landscaping departments 
  • Maintain knowledge of all technology platforms and applications required for proper maintenance of facilities and grounds 
  • Understand the Sensei mission, philosophy and brand standards and develop a team culture around the core company mission 
  • Ensure standard operating practices (SOPs) are in place and regularly updated  
  • Lead by example with the ability to mentor, inspire, empathize and establish and communicate clear expectations aligned with the Sensei Culture, brand standards of guest experience and service guidelines 
  • Be familiar with the existing and emerging health and safety protocols associated with COVID-19 and how such events have impacted our business, guests, and employees 
  • Maintain and monitor execution and follow-through of agreed upon daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly communication meetings and resulting actions items and initiatives  
  • Maintain a strong unwavering commitment to ensure employees are well cared for in their daily work and that wellbeing activities and opportunities for growth are provided 
  • Any and all related duties as assigned by the General Manager 

 Requirements: 

  • Degree in Agronomics, Turf Management or related field 
  • Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America preferred 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Golf Course Superintendent 
  • Proven ability to perform and demonstrate all functions, activities and techniques in the pristine maintenance of a reputable golf course and landscaping as part of a luxury brand 
  • Extensive knowledge of golf course greens, fairways and roughs, irrigation and water systems, chemicals and pesticides, and all commercial products used in golf course and landscaping maintenance  
  • Extensive knowledge of use and operation of all equipment and tools used in golf course and landscaping construction and maintenance 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the game of golf, golf rules and methods of play 
  • Strong organizational, computer and leadership skills  
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work flexible schedules including holidays, weekends and evenings 
  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments in a range of weather conditions
