The Role
We’re looking for a self-starting newsroom operations manager to fill a paid position as a Deputy Operations Editor. The Deputy will work closely with Semafor’s Europe-based Operations Editor to produce, build, and publish on time all of Semafor’s newsletters, as well as enforcing editorial standards, and overseeing the running of the newsroom, including by auditing the use of services, and assisting in the onboarding of new colleagues.

Ideal candidates are self-starters, keen to get involved in a growing newsroom, and to contribute in any and all ways, including administrative tasks, research, and creating data visualizations to accompany our publications. Training will be available for building data visualizations and other production responsibilities, although candidates should bring some core skills and experience to the position.

The position is based in London, but we are willing to consider remote applicants in other European countries. The Deputy Operations Editor will report to the Operations Editor. Candidates must retain the right to work where they live.

  • Monitor Semafor’s newsroom subscriptions, including for photo library providers, news media organizations, data repositories, and others.
  • Monitor the layout of different elements on our site, including Word at a Glance and featured stories.
  • Assist in onboarding new newsroom employees, including by training them on our CMS, building data visualizations, and use of photo providers.
  • Collaborate closely with the rest of Editorial work seamlessly across all of Semafor, and contribute to other products as they are developed.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience in newsroom operations, including any responsibilities listed above
  • A willingness to take on a variety of tasks and responsibilities, ranging from newsletter production to administrative duties
  • Strong copy editing skills, including a sharp eye for maintaining editorial standards
  • An eagerness to be part of a dynamic work environment demanding initiative, flexibility, and a willingness to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed
