About the Role

We’re looking for an early-career journalist with business or economic reporting experience to fill a paid position as a Business Newsroom Fellow, working closely with Semafor’s New York-based Business and Finance Editor and DC-based Senior Editor to help research and produce its business newsletter.  The position would entail carrying out research and administrative tasks, including writing fixtures and creating charts for the newsletter and helping build, produce, and publish it on deadline. Fellows may also be tasked from time to time to work on original stories, as well as on business breaking news, including in Semafor’s Signals format. The journalist may also need to help out across Semafor’s other coverage verticals, which run the gamut, covering geopolitics, climate change, technology, science, culture, business and finance, and American politics.

Ideal candidates would be self-starters, keen to get involved in a growing newsroom, and contribute in any and all ways, including administrative tasks, research, producing newsletters, and creating data visualizations to accompany our publications. Knowledge of, and experience in, business journalism is essential, including the ability to read a balance sheet and familiarity with Edgar.  They should also ideally be able to work with S&P Capital IQ, Bloomberg or Factset; some training may be available, although candidates should bring some core skills and experience with those tools to the position.

The position is based in New York City or Washington, D.C. The Newsroom Fellow will report to the Business & Finance Editor. Candidates will be asked to complete a writing exercise as part of the interview process, and must retain the right to work where they live.
