Semafor is a global news platform for an increasingly complex world in which consumers are overwhelmed by too many news sources and unsure what to trust. We are building Semafor from the ground up to enable world-class journalists to deliver reporting and insights with rigor in journalistic forms that ensure a new level of transparency. Our editors will distill the most important stories from all over in formats that uncover the forces shaping the stories, explain the interests behind polarizing narratives, and replenish the stock of shared facts. As a global platform, Semafor recognizes that smart people can disagree and that informed readers need to understand alternative points of view from competing centers of power and culture in a multi-polar world. About The Role

We are looking to redefine what great journalism looks like - both the reporting itself and the way in which it is delivered to readers across platforms. As Analytics Manager, you will play a critical role in setting the analytics strategy and execution that will underpin our journalism and our business. We are looking for you to bring your expertise to bear in guiding our initial analytics implementation, taking into account stakeholder needs and industry best practices. You will help us create a new media company from the ground up, developing the analytics building blocks that will scale across each new product we build, including web, app, and email newsletters. You will be a critical early member of the team, reporting to the Head of Product, and will help build a world-class analytics organization as we grow.

Responsibilities

  • Work with company leaders to develop the analytics strategy for Semafor, including how we can make data a competitive advantage for our company
  • Partner with the Head of Engineering to identify and implement the foundational data infrastructure, with an eye toward future scalability 
  • Integrate analytics tools to allow us to track progress, analyze initiatives, and provide feedback to advertisers
  • Lead regular sessions with cross-functional stakeholders to assess performance and adjust strategy accordingly
  • Create a high-performance culture around analytics and help stakeholders across the company use data effectively
  • Develop event tracking specs for engineering implementation and ensure that products in market have correct tracking 
  • Bring a strong industry perspective on what competitors are doing well around data or where they are falling short, and how we can break through

Things we’re looking for

  • 5+ years of analytics experience, including experience in high-growth consumer companies and/or media businesses
  • Ability to synthesize insights from data and communicate those insights clearly to senior leaders
  • Experience implementing analytics tools and a perspective on the pros/cons of different approaches
  • Experience establishing excellent analytics processes within cross-functional tech teams and working closely with engineers on implementation
  • Experience in scrappy startup and/or dynamic environments and willingness to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed
  • Passion for the media industry and great journalism
