Director of Engineering, Personas Platform

At Segment, we believe companies should be able to send their data wherever they want, whenever they want, with no fuss. Unfortunately, most product managers, analysts, and marketers spend too much time searching for the data they need, while engineers are stuck integrating the tools they want to use. Segment standardizes and streamlines data infrastructure with a single platform that collects, unifies, and sends data to hundreds of business tools with the flip of a switch. That way, our customers can focus on building amazing products and personalized messages for their customers, letting us take care of the complexities of processing their customer data reliably at scale. We’re in the running to power the entire customer data ecosystem, and we need the best people to take the market.

Role Overview

Lead the engineering of the foundational Personas capabilities, focused on systems that underly Personas functionality, deliver high scalability, reliability, security, and underpin the largest new technical capabilities needed by the product. Grow our engineering managers and develop talent in these highly technical areas.

Impacts You Will Have

Personas Platform is responsible for the high scale systems and features that both power Personas and deliver a majority of our customer-facing features. Personas is itself a Business Unit within Segment & Twilio. Personas is at the heart of some of Segment’s largest customers, and powers hundreds of others.

In this role, you will enable us to scale to a different, and much larger impact. Personas should be able to run for every Twilio customer no matter the size, should deliver on an international scale, should power realtime experiences across the world, and should drive the largest and most complex business analysis and respectful interactions between our customers and their customers.

The personas platform should also support new initiatives focused on marketing technology and automation, and elsewhere, built atop these foundational components, and should be the long term engine for novel data analysis and delivery capabilities at scale.

By focusing on engineering the future of our Platform systems, you will help us reach these goals and more.

How You’ll Do It

  • Manage and develop a team of world-class Engineers
  • Be a strong technical leader for the foundation, partnering closely with engineering teams to design the next iterations of critical systems for identity, compute, profiles, security
  • Directly manage existing Personas Foundation Engineering Managers across a number of teams
  • Grow our Platform team from ~15 → 30-40 in the next year
  • Develop long term technical roadmaps in close partnership with the Personas GM, Product team, TPMs, and the rest of Personas leadership.
  • Help Personas collaborate with our largest customers, and across the larger Twilio organization.

What you’ll bring:

  • Track record running multiple engineering teams, including managing engineering managers
  • Track record creating real-time, high-scale, highly reliable distributed systems, and leading others to create those systems
  • Track record delivering products to enterprise customers, in close coordination with product teams
